Ce n’est pas très clair. C’est même plutôt paradoxal. En Espagne, si rares sont les groupes à s’exporter et à conquérir le sommet des charts métallistiques, pour ce qui est de la scène underground, elle est en pleine ébullition. Ce pays, pas vraiment réputé pour être une terre de musiques extrêmes, au même titre que son voisin portugais, est pourtant un incroyable vivier dès qu’on se met à creuser un peu. Une scène Black extrêmement foisonnante, une autre Thrash un peu ringarde mais toujours très attachée aux traditions, à une imagerie folklorique faite de cuir et de clous, les ibériques n’ont rien à envier à leurs compagnons européens. Tout ceci résume parfaitement la situation d’OMISSION, une formation de Blackened Thrash ultra-kitsch qui traine ses guêtres dans les sous-sols espagnols depuis une décennie et qui est devenu avec son premier album, Thrash Metal Is Violence en 2009, le chef de la propagande du Thrash underground en Espagne.
Avec son Merciless Jaws From Hell, deuxième album paru début 2011 sur Xtreem Music et réédité un an après sous format tape par War Productions, OMISSION continue à faire dans le rétro plein gaz, en atteste une pochette certes bandante, mais de bien mauvais gout. Je préfèrerais honnêtement que ce soit leur Satanic Thrash qui fasse durcir des chibres. Hélas, à la fin de ces trois-quarts d’heure de méchanceté gratuite, c’est à peine si on se retrouve avec une demi-molle. Bien qu’ouvertement axé sur un esprit old-school très intègre, les rapprochant par la même occasion des SADUS, OVERKILL, POSSESSED et autres SODOM, OMISSION ne peut guère faire mieux qu’un rabattement grossier de plusieurs influences, peinant terriblement à imposer sa propre griffe. Parmi celles-ci, on retrouve le haut du panier du Thrash européen, mais assez peu celui du Thrash américain ou sud-américain. On retrouve aussi un certain… CRADLE OF FILTH, dans l’approche des vocaux par Patillas. Ce dernier hurle d’une voix enrouée et tombe fréquemment dans des aigus stridents qui ne sont pas sans évoquer les pitreries de Dani Filth. Pareil pour la basse qui ronronne comme un vieux VENOM ou HELLHAMMER. Niveau intensité, on ne peut que se réjouir de ces rythmiques effrénées, œuvre d’un garçon très talentueux, j’ai nommé Riky, le frappeur des rois du gore à l’espagnole d’AVULSED ! C’est très agréable de trouver un repère comme lui, car à vrai dire, on se perd un peu dans ce labyrinthe de miroirs qui renvoient successivement des reflets de Black satanique, mais aussi de Speed Metal quand Marco déploie ses solos très lyriques. Le plaisir d’écouter ce Merciless Jaws From Hell réside dans ces incroyables cavalcades d’une remarquable vivacité. Non, ces chorizos sont de fins techniciens, particulièrement redoutables dans la vitesse d’exécution. Il leur manque seulement un sens de la composition qui puisse les faire rivaliser dans un premier temps avec d’autres représentants européens comme BLOODTHIRST ou ENDLESS PAIN. Parce que pour l’instant, au-delà de la flamme qu’ils déclarent au Thrash tout du long, il n’y a pas l’étincelle qui fait passer ce disque dans la catégorie au-dessus. Oui, ça bastonne mais c’est une bien maigre consolation.
Voilà donc un CD qui ne nous apprendra rien de bien intéressant. Bien sûr, il nous confortera dans l’idée que les espagnols ont une vision assez rustre et conservatrice du Metal extrême, mais qu’ils sont rarement capables que de faire mieux que de lui rendre hommage. On aurait aimé qu’enfin, un candidat se démarque dans cette course à l’échalote. Mais c’est pas encore gagné.
