PENTAGRAM peut se vanter de figurer parmi le très petit nombre de groupes précurseurs du genre Hard Rock / Metal. Pourtant son nom est rarement cité alors que les DEEP PURPLE, LED ZEPPELIN et autres BLACK SABBATH font figure de référence. Il n’y a là aucune injustice puisque la musique de PENTAGRAM est loin d’être au même niveau. Le groupe a peut-être bien laissé un souvenir dans les mémoires de certains, en revanche on ne peut pas dire que sa musique ait durablement marqué les esprits. Par conséquent, l’initiative consistant à ressortir de vieux inédits, des démos et quelques titres live peut paraître assez superflue. Car il ne s’agit pas simplement d’une plongée dans les années 70/71, il faut aussi compter avec le son “démo” de l’époque et son cortège de crachouillis, d’approximations ainsi que le mixage quasi inexistant. Ce bond en arrière est donc rendu assez pénible par des conditions d’écoute franchement pas idéales.
Les 22 titres qui nous sont proposés ne nous laissent pas beaucoup d’occasions de nous réjouir, ni sur le fond, ni sur la forme. Hormis peut-être l’extravagance psychédélique de “Everything’s Turning To Night” et du pêchu “Smokescreen”, ancêtre du Heavy Metal. Et encore, à condition de ne pas les écouter en boucle ! Le meilleur morceau étant incontestablement “Under My Thumb”… des ROLLING STONES.
First Daze Here Too est un produit qui s’adresse exclusivement aux fans des early 70’s et de PENTAGRAM en particulier.
