THE CONTORTIONIST… ou le meilleur moyen de mettre de l’eau dans son vin sans ajouter d’huile sur le feu. On le sait, le Deathcore n’est pas le plus populaire des styles musicaux. Et en enchainant encore et encore des reviews qui concernent ses plus actifs représentants, je me fais en quelque sorte l’avocat du diable. Totalement inconnu du grand public jusqu’alors, THE CONTORTIONIST, qui nous arrive d’Indianapolis (aux States, évidement) a déclenché un vrai coup de tonnerre en cette année 2010 avec son Exoplanet, premier d’une série d’albums qu’on espère longue et du même calibre. Ceux qui confondent volontiers Deathcore et bruitisme avec une mauvaise foi navrante n’auront qu’à essayer cette œuvre pour se convaincre qu’un mariage avec la musicalité et la finesse n’est pas si improbable qu’il n’y parait. Encore faut-il vouloir être convaincu…
En ce qui concerne Exoplanet, je ne garantis pas qu’il plaise à tout le monde. Mais il apparaît difficilement cohérent de s’extasier massivement sur des AUGURY, des CYNIC, des BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME sans pouvoir faire l’éloge à égale mesure de THE CONTORTIONIST. Le groupe grimpe à différents barreaux d’une haute échelle mélodique et nous propose une vision complexée et subtile du Metal combiné à la musique classique moderne, au Jazz, à la Pop, au Lounge et au Blues. Toujours à l’affût quand il s’agit de faire preuve d’imagination, les cinq gus’ nous promènent en laisse dans un univers un peu foufou, à mi-chemin entre l’excentricité d’IWRESTLEDABEARONCE et le professionnalisme de DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN. La batterie instaure une atmosphère chaotique, branchée sur courant alternatif et toujours partante pour une série de frappes magnétiques à vous décoller les méninges. Le jeu de cordes est pas mal non plus. Largement inspiré par le mouvement Deathcore en vogue mais également rompu aux joutes techniques, il est imprévisible de but en blanc et ne semble suivre aucun des schémas préétablis habituels. Mieux encore, la combinaison entre les deux offre des moments d’une intensité extrême qui cartonnent votre esprit, tel l’intro magique de « Contact » ou le final grandiose d’« Oscillator » sur lequel il est impossible de ne pas accrocher. Paradoxalement, j’ai remarqué en me repassant le disque que c’est quand Dave (chant) la boucle qu’on savoure encore plus les mélodies et l’inspiration hors-normes des musiciens. Dans le genre instrumentale, « Axiom » est géniale. Elle précède la trilogie « Exoplanet » composée de « Egress » qui rompt avec les sept minutes de silence de Dave, de « Void » et son tempo pachydermique et pour finir, de « Light » qui, comme je m’y attendais, est tranchée entre une reposante quiétude et un dernier coup de rein bestial. La boucle est bouclée, nous pouvons refermer l’ouvrage.
Exoplanet. Voilà donc un disque ambitieux qui aura au moins le mérite de réconcilier quelques renfrognés avec le Deathcore, puisque rarement l’osmose entre la violence du style et la pureté des mouvements progressifs n’aura atteint pareil degré de perfection. Idéal pour un voyage dans les étoiles ou le firmament musical, Exoplanet est une navette dont on ne veut pas s’échapper. On se sent tellement bien, en apesanteur.
