Ca y’est ! Les trois infernaux frangins sont de retour pour nous jouer un mauvais tour. Et il va de soi que jour après jour, la portée brésilienne s’affirme comme les authentiques successeurs de SEPULTURA. Multipliant les offrandes de qualité mondialement reconnues (Black Force Domain en 1995, Conquerors Of Armageddon en 2000…), KRISIUN a cependant (et c’est un comble pour un style des plus toniques) montré quelques signes de fatigue sur AssassiNation sorti il y’a un peu plus de deux ans. Sans que cet album soit complètement plat, il y avait été décelé un certain manque de fraîcheur tropicale. Forgés par leurs nombreuses péripéties publiques en compagnie de KREATOR, CRADLE OF FILTH, DIMMU BORGIR, ROTTING CHRIST, CANNIBAL CORPSE (pour n’énumérer que les plus méritants), les trois frères sont alors désireux d’immédiatement rectifier le tir avec un Southern Storm dont l’appellation n’est pas sans évoquer qu’on va s’en prendre plein la face.
C’est effectivement le sort qui nous est réservé. La « tempête du Sud » démarre en trombe avec quatre pistes à la brutalité certes présente mais encore au stade embryonnaire pour du KRISIUN. J’entends par là que leur Brutal Death est trop compact et ce, nonobstant les riffs simplistes en plus d’être techniques. Etonnant car en général, les brésiliens ne tâtonnent pas aussi longtemps avant de lâcher les chevaux. Bref, l’essentiel est quand même qu’ils se rattrapent avec brio en enchaînant une incroyable série de six hits en puissance. Parmi les plus remarquables, on notera « Massacre Under The Sun » pour son intro à la basse qui étanche cette soif d’air frais, « Contradictions Of Decay » car tout simplement ma préférée et la piste « bling-bling », la traditionnelle cover. Après « In League With Satan » de VENOM sur Works Of Carnage et « Sweet Revenge » de MOTÖRHEAD sur AssassiNation, les Auriverdes nous présentent leur version revisitée du « Refuse/Resist » de leurs compatriotes SEPULTURA. Si l’originale reste comme souvent plus aboutie (pour ne pas dire que la reprise ne vaut pas une queue de cerise à mon goût), l’effort en demeure louable car après tout, ce titre haranguant est le seul à suffisamment osciller rythmiquement pour nous faire oublier l’opacité générale. Sur le plan purement individuel, la cohésion est comme souvent le point fort du trio et de l’opus. Le relais entre les grunts d’Alex et les instrumentations tribales se fait naturellement et comme souvent chez KRISIUN, le jeu de batterie de Max, qui n’hésite pas à user et abuser de ses talents de marteleur (solo sur « Sons Of Pest » à l’appui), mis en avant par une production de haute volée, est depuis belle lurette responsable de leur succès. La fin du skeud est plus floue car constituée de trois pistes (dont une instrumentale acoustique inexplicablement placée en bout de course) correctes, mais comme le carré initial, pas foncièrement originales.
Mine de rien, le combo livre ici sa septième réalisation en 18 ans de carrière et force est de constater que de plus en plus de détails minimes relativisent l’euphorie qui nous embaume après une sortie de KRISIUN. Cette dernière est à postériori la personnification même du célèbre protagoniste de l’œuvre de Robert Louis Stevensson, le Docteur Jekyll réincarné entre les pistes 5 et 10. A la différence de l’épilogue du roman, ce ne sera pas Mister Hyde qui sortira vainqueur.
