Après Casus Luciferi en 2003, et Rabid Death’s Curse en 2000, les suédois de WATAIN reviennent en force avec ce nouvel effort, Sworn To The Dark, qui sans faire exploser les barrières de l’innovation, conserve les influences qui leurs sont chères, tout en faisant légèrement avancer le schmilblick. Les racines, ce sont bien sur les origines du Black Metal scandinave tel qu’on le pratiquait à l’orée des années 90. Lorsque les ténors s’appelaient EMPEROR, DARKTHRONE, MARDUK, MAYHEM, ou encore DISSECTION.
Sans atteindre le niveau légendaire des sus nommés, force est de constater qu’encore une fois, WATAIN s’en tire avec les honneurs. Les compositeurs savent aérer leur musique extrêmement agressive avec des tempos médium et des mélodies bienvenues, sans tomber dans la mièvrerie Heavy, ni pêcher par le trop commercial. A ce titre, des morceaux comme « Storm Of The Antichrist » et sa structure à tiroir, « Sworn To The Dark » et son énergie purement Thrash mixée à un refrain 100% haineux et un pont diablement lourd et inquiétant, « Underneath The Cenotaph » et son riff diabolique dynamitant un blast beat à faire rougir Hellhammer, « The Serpent’s Chalice » qui n’aurait pas détonné sur un album de MAYHEM période Dead, ou encore le final « Stellarvore » et ses chœurs faussement angéliques sur fond d’apocalypse musicale, sauront satisfaire les puristes comme les néophytes du Black Metal.
Et c’est peut être la tout le talent de WATAIN, de ne pas avoir oublié en chemin que le vrai Black Metal n’est pas qu’une succession de borborygmes sur fond de paganisme lyophilisé, mais une vraie musique qui vient du cœur, basée sur des concepts sincères et authentiques, jouée par de vrais musiciens ne se contentant pas de répéter le même pauvre riff ad lib.
La production de l’objet étant quasi parfaite, les vocaux sacrément impressionnants, et le tout interprété avec une précision quasi chirurgicale, vous comprendrez de vous-même qu’avec Rom 5:12 de MARDUK, Sworn To The Dark est l’album de Black de la rentrée 2007. Inutile de sacrifier une jeune vierge pour l’acquérir (quoique si quelqu’un pouvait égorger certaines chanteuses françaises, ça m’arrangerait, mais ça m’étonnerait qu’elles soient encore vierges….), mais les bougies noires et autres encens paraissent indispensables.
Décidemment, de nous jours, vendre son âme au diable est gage de qualité !!
