SWALLOW THE SUN est une figure de proue du Doom finlandais et ce troisième opus du groupe devrait le placer en position de maître à bord.
« Hope » est un titre énigmatique pour un combo oeuvrant dans le Doom, d’autant qu’il ne contient même pas de point d’interrogation comme avait pu le faire par le passé, dans un autre style, GLOOMY GRIM avec son album « Life ? ». Enigmatique donc, mais qui prend son sens à l’écoute de cet album. En effet, « Hope » nous donne le sentiment de naviguer, au gré des flots, sur le Radeau de la Méduse.
Dès le titre éponyme, l’auditeur se trouve emporté par une vague d’émotions qu’il ne maîtrise pas. Les mélodies mélancoliques, pour ne pas dire tragiques, et les vocaux, tantôt profonds, tantôt gutturaux, nous submergent par leur intensité. Le désespoir des naufragés est palpable. La rage l’emporte parfois, comme une dernière rébellion contre la destinée (« These Hours Of Despair », « The Empty Skies », sur lesquels les vocaux se font plus éraillés). Pour autant, tout espoir ne semble pas perdu car, au détour d’une vague qui semblait fatale l’embarcation a tenu bon et au loin, on croit percevoir un navire : la voix claire sur « The Justice Of Suffering », morceau sur lequel on trouve aussi quelques mélodies à la TYPE O NEGATIVE ; les passages minimalistes de « Don’t Fall Asleep (Horror pt. 2) », comme l’homme reste sans voix confronté à la beauté ineffable d’un lever de soleil sur l’océan, suivi de riffs et d’un clavier qui vous donnent envie de continuer à vous battre, le cœur gros, où larmes de tristesse et d’espoir se mêlent indistinctement… « Too Cold For Tears » est de même facture : tout simplement bouleversant. Les sons nous apaisent, nous endorment, mais y aura-t-il un réveil ? Et ces chants angéliques sur « No Light, No Hope » : sont-ce des sirènes perfides ou des envoyés de Dieu ? Enfer ou Paradis ? « Doomed To Walk The Earth » semble lui nous condamner aux limbes…
Hope : un album poignant, fait de larmes et de sang.
