L’album Human Error: Ways To Self Destruction de CRIONICS sort directement de la scène underground polonaise via le label Empire Records en 2002. Suite à sa signature chez l’écurie Anglaise Candlelight qui compte dans ses rangs les maîtres EMPEROR, cette galette de Black Death à tendance symphonique fait peau neuve avec sa réédition sur ce mythique label.
Si le style est bien entendu du Black Death à tendance symphonique assez classique, les influences et les rythmes adoptés confèrent à la musique de CRIONICS une certaine unité. Certains passages font penser aux albums de DIMMU BORGIR (on est à la limite du plagiat dans certains cas : les premières minutes du titre « Crionics »), tandis que d’autres plus catchy pourraient rappeler les débuts de EMPEROR. L’alternance des voix gutturales Death et des voix typiquement Black font immédiatement penser à BEHEMOTH. CRIONICS est donc un mélange de ces groupes incontournables de la scène actuellement.
Human Error: Ways To Self Destruction débute par une excellente mise en bouche avec le titre un peu cliché : « Satanic Syndrome 666 » où les très bons riffs de guitares donnent tout de suite à ce morceau un effet d’assimilation immédiate. Sur les autres titres, l’influence de DIMMU BORGIR est omniprésente : les claviers sont utilisés comme un instrument à part entière et ne vient pas juste pour les arrangements des morceaux.
La durée des compos est de taille standard idéale pour la radio (4 min en moyenne) sauf que les radios ne passe jamais ce type de musique. Pour du Black symphonique cela est assez court. Les très bon riffs bien black sont trop isolés et auraient mérité un développement plus soutenu comme sur « Waterfalls Of Darkness ». Human Error: Ways To Self Destruction regorge de bonnes idées qui ne sont malheureusement pas assez développées. Du coup après avoir débuté de manière remarquable, l’album s’essouffle au fils des morceaux, avec quelques piqûres de rappel comme le morceau « Sacrosanct Strength ».
La seconde moitié de cet opus est très compacte et massive. Difficile d’extraire un titre particulièrement mais de nombreux passages sont à souligner : le début de « Hallowed Whores » et aussi son solo de guitare très réussi par exemple. Un peu de repos est apporté par le titre « Episode Of The Falling Star » qui est plus calme et mid tempo avec une mélodie principale efficace mais facile. En plus des synthés omniprésent à la DIMMU, certaines structures et sonorités font penser immédiatement à EMPEROR et surtout le titre « I Am The Black Wizards » qui est présent comme si ce morceau hantait l’album. Il faut donc attendre que le groupe trouve son propre style, sa propre personnalité, en tout cas il est parti sur de bonnes bases.
