Allons y. Une chronique se doit d’être objective. Ne pas descendre pour l’amour de la formule, ou encenser en pratiquant la métaphore gratuite. Mais ne vous méprenez pas. Si par le passé j’ai pu décoller vers de très hautes sphères en évoquant certains groupes, ça n’est pas parce que je connais personnellement leur manager, ou parce que la sœur du bassiste m’a jadis offert ses services, c’est parce qu’ils le méritaient. Alors quoi, se contenter d’un boulot informatif pur, style « Le premier morceau est super bien, y’a des grosses guitares et le chanteur à la pêche » ? Vous voudriez me priver du plaisir d’écrire, de trouver de belles tournures de phrases, et rendre la chronique linéaire ? Tatata…pas pour moi ça !
Alors parlons. De NORMA JEAN tiens. Ca tombe bien d’ailleurs, puisque c’est d’eux qu’il s’agit. NORMA JEAN évolue depuis son premier album dans un post-hardcore classique, louchant dur vers le screaming. Question d’époque. Leurs deux premiers albums présentaient les caractéristiques inhérentes à tout jeune groupe, de l’envie, la hargne, mais des erreurs de jeunesse. Vite corrigées ici. Et c’est la que le bat blesse. En renonçant à toutes les imperfections de début de carrière, on finit par rentrer dans le moule. One Hit Wonder.
Alors c’est sur, l’album va cartonner chez les teenagers américains avides de sensations fortes. Il y a tout. Tout ce qu’on veut pour effrayer les parents, mais pas trop, sinon, ça fait mal à la tête. Soyons honnêtes. NORMA JEAN, c’est CREED ou NICKELBACK version dopée, testostérone en avant. Ou bien DOWN THE SUN et REFUSED après une cure de bromure. Genre « On est méchants mais pas trop, sinon on va pas vendre ». Certes, les grosses guitares sont la (ouah !), le son énorme (ouais !), et le chanteur haineux aussi (trop cool !!), mais bon, tout ça sonne trop formaté pour être honnête. Calibré 100% teigneux, mais avec le cadre pour pas déborder avec les crayons de couleurs. A cents lieues d’un DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN par exemple. Qui eux bavent partout avec leurs feutres. Soyons clair, c’est bien fait, bien produit (Ross Robinson pardi !), et la nouvelle recrue derrière le micro (Cory Brandan), assure. Mais on s’ennuie grave. Les quatre premiers morceaux passent, et on attend. Le cinquième morceau, « The End Of All Things Will Be Televised », offre quelques changements de rythmes bienvenus. « Songs Sound Much Sadder » a un bon feeling à la REFUSED justement. « The Longest Lasting Statement » est bien speed, ça fait du bien. « Amnesty Please », en dehors de son titre bien senti, est accrocheur, avec un très bon riff redondant (c’est un compliment !) en background. « Don’t you dare singing with me ? » hurle le chanteur. Ben oui, à la limite on va faire ça. Ca passera le temps.
Un bon packaging pour enrober le tout, des titres de chansons assez hermétiques pour intriguer, et l’affaire est dans le sac. Pas trop de risques. Surtout pas. C’est bien ça le problème à notre époque. On a peur. Peur de se démarquer. On va tous finir avec un cristal dans la paume de la main. Le mien est noir tiens. Pas bon ça…
