Jeff Scott Soto est l’un des chanteurs les plus doués de sa génération. Hélas ses qualités de songwriter sont plus limitées. Les nombreux projets auxquels il participe ont clairement montré que, faute d’être encadré par des musiciens talentueux et inspirés, la pertinence de ses compositions devient moins évidente. Ici, la personnalité de Frederik Akesson (plus motivé avec ARCH ENEMY) ne suffit pas à enrichir ce projet. 7 est l’exemple frappant de l’album bien conçu, bien interprété, bien produit, mais qui ne laissera aucune trace.
Ce Hard Rock gentillet a déjà été entendu des centaines de fois et la qualité du chant de Soto ne fait pas oublier le manque criant d’inspiration qui règne ici. Qu’il tente de nous émouvoir avec des ballades (« Forevermore », « Back 2 The Feeling ») ou de nous faire bouger avec des titres rapides (« On My Way », « End Of The Line »), Soto ne fait que confirmer que, dans chaque style, il n’échappe pas à la médiocrité ! C’est le genre de démonstration dont on se serait bien passé.
Sur Cats And Dogs, l’originalité n’avait pas non plus beaucoup de place mais au moins les compositions avaient un certain intérêt.
L’amitié entre Marcel Jacob (bassiste et co-auteur) et Jeff Scott Soto a également pesé sur le mixage qui met la basse très en avant ce qui n’est pas toujours très réussi.
Quelques titres parviennent à sortir du lot : « Nowhere Fast » est assez groovie, elle bénéficie d’un refrain accrocheur ; mais elle résiste mal aux écoutes répétées. « Falling » est assez efficace. Et « Shed A Tear Goodbye » contribue à faire remonter le niveau.
