Pour un premier album, THE DOGMA nous livre un skeud d'une surprenante maturité. En attaquant d'entrée par « Black Roses », le titre éponyme, le groupe n'hésite pas à affirmer d'entrée son style au risque de s'aliéner une frange des métalleux qui pourraient être rebutés par son aspect trop symphonique et mélancolique. La voix de Daniele Binetti (qui rappelle étrangement par moments Matt Barlow, l'ex-chanteur d'ICED EARTH) y est pour beaucoup de même que l'utilisation subtile, bien que fréquente, des claviers et de l'Indigo Sontring Quartet et du Filarmonica Marchigiana d'Ancône. Pour autant, la sauce prend et les chœurs à la THERION qui viennent clore « Black Roses » et ouvrir « Wicked Angel » sont du meilleur goût.
Dommage que l'artwork, bien que réussi, ne donne pas une idée fidèle de la voie musicale empruntée par le combo. En effet, on pourrait croire à un groupe de Goth / Rock, alors que THE DOGMA, c'est un groupe de Heavy, symphonique certes, mais de Heavy quand même : il suffit d'écouter les riffs. Et que dire de « Wicked Angel » ou « Queen Of The Damned » qui dévoilent un aspect Power du groupe ? « Ghost Of War » avec son refrain offre lui aussi son instant True Metal.
Si THE DOGMA ne révolutionne pas le genre pour autant, il se distingue de la masse par son intelligence musicale et son sens de l'à-propos dans l'utilisation des orchestrations et des claviers (cf. « Wicked Angel » ou encore « Temptation » et son break taillé pour la scène) et avec des solos de guitares, envoûtants mais jamais démonstratifs (« Ghost Of War », « Temptation », « Sands Of Time »). Car Black Roses, c'est d'abord de l'émotion (« Devil's Bride », « … And Julie no more » et la ballade finale « Maryann »).
La mélancolie de Black Roses n'est bien sûr pas de celle qui habite les groupes de Doom, il s'agit d'une mélancolie entraînante, plus que déprimante, charmante, même si mielleuse pour certains. Mais que demandaient de plus à des compatriotes du grand Don Giovanni ? Alors laissez-vous porter les métalleux au grand cœur, cet album est fait pour vous.
