Dans les années 90, Tad Doyle, frontman et lead guitar de TAD et HOG MOLLY, était une figure de la scène Grunge de Seattle. Cet ancien boucher de 100 kg avait de quoi marquer les esprits.
Quinze ans plus tard, c'est un Tad blanchi, chauve, moins jovial et plus austère qui nous revient avec un nouveau groupe et un premier album Doom Metal. A l'écoute de cet opus, on ne peut que se demander si Tad a vécu une expérience traumatique, un séisme de forte magnitude, un tsunami, une crise mystique ou une rencontre avec le malin. Comment expliquer autrement cette musique torturée, toxique. Ce chant hurlé, déformé, rocailleux, suppliant. Ces cris interminables, infernaux. Ces râles lointains. Cette musique saccadée, déconstruite, d'une lenteur désespérante. Même l'artwork (assez kitch) donne une vision de la Géhenne. Une forêt hivernale et des totems de basalte sur fonds d'éruption solaire dédoublée formant comme un visage grimaçant ou un test de Rorchach diabolique.
Brothers Of The Sonic Cloth n'est pas juste un disque. C'est une expérience.
Au départ projet solo, BOTSC est devenu un collectif quand Tad a décidé de roder son projet sur scène et de l'enregistrer en live. Il s'adjoint Peggy Doyle à la basse et Dave French aux fûts. Le trio enregistre au Robert Lang Studios et dans le propre studio de Tad à Seattle et fait appel à Bill Anderson, pour le mixage (YOB, SLEEP, HIGH ON FIRE, MELVINS).
L'album se déguste d'une traite, on ne profite bien de l'aventure qu'en la vivant intégralement. La compo installe progressivement son ambiance délétère et t'emprisonne avec ses riffs tortueux, et sa rythmique entêtante. Ses mélodies arrivent par couches successives, comme une marée d'équinoxe, une petite vague en annonçant une plus forte, mais sans que jamais la tempête n'éclate. Rien ne vient briser le continuum, ni break, ni accélération ni même un petit solo.
La tracklist ne fait aucune concession, techniquement très maîtrisée, elle égrène ses 7 pistes avec une constance mathématique, jusqu'à la dernière piste, "Outro (piano)". Cette piste, on l'espère libératrice, enfin un peu de douceur, enfin la rédemption. Espérance rapidement ruinée, rien ne viendra te sortir de ta misère.
Cette dernière piste illustre bien le disque. C'est comme dans les films d'horreur : la musique ne soulage pas, la musique n'annonce rien de bon. Il n'y a pas de salut.
