Putain, ça fait plaisir ! Voilà deux ans que j’attends le successeur de cette tuerie qu’est Polarity… Quoi, vous pensiez que DECREPIT BIRTH était déjà de retour ? Détrompez-vous. C’est juste que pour noyer mon impatience, j’ai un truc tout con. Ecouter, savourer, déguster, encore et encore. Et putain, un tel album, ça fait plaisir ! C’est pour ça qu’aujourd’hui, j’ai franchi le pas. Il fallait que je vous en parle. Peut-être que cette tardive incantation aura un effet sur les astres, l’alignement planétaire ou je-ne-sais quel bordel astrologique et qu’enfin, je pourrais dire que ces messieurs sont passés du statut de valeurs sûres à celui de maitres-étalon. De toute façon, l’histoire ne s’écrira pas d’une autre façon. Presque dix ans après …And Times Begins et six après Diminishing Between Worlds, ce Polarity mérite bien un petit-frère qui sera la terreur des cours de récréations, ayant lui-même un immense potentiel récréatif.
Je me suis auto-surpris. Je me disais qu’après le prometteur Diminishing Between Worlds, DECREPIT BIRTH allait confirmer pépère ses bonnes dispositions. Plus que ça, c’est une violente tarte dans la gueule, une explosion de saveurs, un concentré d’adrénaline. Au-delà de la propreté apparente, de l’éclat de ce Death Metal technique, c’est l’incroyable divertissement qu’il apporte qui surprend. Ces Californiens ne sont déjà plus dans l’optique d’une démonstration technique voyeuriste, d’un étalage de professionnalisme qui irait jusqu’à l’écœurement. Chaque morceau, chaque seconde de cet album est une ode à la maestria de ce courant musical. Pendant que BRAIN DRILL me fait vomir, DECREPIT BIRTH me fait jouir. Les superbes arpèges de « The Quickening Of Time », la puissance de feu de « Solar Impulse », la virtuosité de « Metatron », tout est sujet à l’émerveillement. Polarity est une sortie ambivalente qui se plait dans le confort du Death Metal le plus tapageur et dans le péril de schémas techniques imaginatifs. Jamais on n’a l’impression que ces mecs vont sombrer dans le Death bête et méchant, comme le font pourtant un paquet de formations similaires. Non, la maitrise des instruments est un élément clé de leur système de jeu. A ce titre, la complicité entre Matt Sotelo et Dan Eggers, auteur des solos de guitare sur « Polarity », « The Quickening Of Time » et « Symbiosis » est primordiale. Copains comme cochons, ces deux poussent cet album dans des retranchements harmoniques géniaux, sans jamais perdre de vue l’idée que ce Death technique doit rester accessible. Et preuve que Polarity est une œuvre captivante, la fin d’un morceau implique automatiquement le déclenchement d’un processus de réflexion qui a pour but de deviner à l’avance quelles surprises nous sont encore réservées. Et vous savez quoi ? On se plante à chaque fois, parce que DECREPIT BIRTH a cette capacité de passer du coq à l’âne sans prévenir, de surprendre avec des envolées techniques improvisées (« Sea Of Memories ») ou des arrangements pourvus d’un fort taux de créativité. Le Technical Death sous son plus beau jour.
C’est fait. Je suis soulagé d’avoir pu dire tout le bien que je pense d’un tel disque. Il est d’ailleurs un des seuls qui soit capable de me détendre et d’envisager la signature sereine d’un armistice après que des groupes comme BRAIN DRILL ou dans un autre registre, RINGS OF SATURN, aient déclenché des conflits armés. DECREPIT BIRTH est ce médiateur, ce « Pascal le grand-frère » qui fait rentrer les choses dans l’ordre juste. On ne réalise qu’après coup que la musique est belle, pour peu qu’à l’image de ce groupe, elle soit écrite avec le cœur.
