Tiens, et si on se jetait un petit album de guitare instrumentale ?
Ceci dit, la question en elle-même implique une réponse évidente, puisque c’est moi qui décide ! Alors chers amis férus de six cordes bavardes, de sextolets enflammés et autres prouesses de tricoteurs dingues, ce The Sweet Path est pour vous !
Manu LIVERTOUT (et non pas Manu livre tout, on est pas chez Casto…) est du genre instrumentaliste boulimique. Il se démène dans pas moins de trois formations différentes (BLOODY MARY en tant que bassiste, BOYDAMONT et son projet solo), et force est d’admettre que le bonhomme est plutôt éclectique. Il nage entre Hip-Hop, Funk et Metal, on comprendra donc assez facilement qu’il n’est pas le genre de mec à se laisser cloisonner gentiment.
Laissons de côté ses projets annexes pour mieux nous concentrer sur cet album je vous prie. Produit par Guillaume BIDEAU, hurleur chez SCARVE et MNEMIC, qui joue aussi du drum-kit et de la programmation, The Sweet Path est du genre cohérent tout en demeurant extrêmement ouvert.
On trouve un peu de tout ici, mais surtout pas n’importe quoi, car l’homme à ses influences !
Et oui, on ne reprend pas Jeff BECK au hasard…Et si le « Shapes Of Things » du maître figure sur cette galette, c’est pour clairement afficher l’affiliation.<br<
Alors oui Manu s’inspire du compositeur du fameux et intemporel Beck-Ola, mais ça n’est pas tout. On retrouve aussi une autre inspiration, celle du Satch, M.SATRIANI, dans l’utilisation de tempi bien chaloupés et d’harmoniques sifflantes.
La démonstration n’est pas de mise ici cependant, et le but avoué est de faire frémir l’auditeur et d’agiter ses petits petons à l’aide de bon son.
« Doggy Punk » est fun, très fun. « Shuffle Waves » plus classique, mais contagieux. « Waiting For Love », bien plombé. « I Don’t Care » est plus teigneux qu’un coyote qui n’a pas bouffé depuis 3 semaines. « Red Sky », c’est le Hot Rod de la guitare instrumentale, très méchant, avec une rythmique serrée comme un expresso du samedi soir.
Le jeu en lui-même est fluide, inventif, ne s’embarrasse pas de considérations et de bavardages inutiles, et c’est ainsi que la comparaison avec BECK prend tout son sens.
Ici, on va à l’essentiel, le climat, l’ambiance, ou l’efficacité.
On peut penser à des albums comme Flying In A Blue Dream, la partie vocale en moins, ou peut être en poussant le bouchon un peu plus loin, à un Jeff Beck’s Guitar Shop, pour la volonté d’être direct.
En tout cas, The Sweet Path, sans être la pierre de rosette de la guitare reste un album plaisant de bout en bout, avec une production impeccable.
