Ce nouvel album des danois de Manticora n'est plus très " nouveau " à proprement parler puisque sorti courant 2002. Chronique un peu tardive donc, mais mieux vaut tard que jamais ! Cet opus est basé sur le roman de Dan Simmons du même nom. Nous avons à faire ici à un concept album de haute volée digne du travail de Blind Guardian avec un soupçon de prog'.
La production est énorme (merci Tommy Hansen), le son de gratte bien lourd tranche à merveille avec les rythmes ultra-speed et les mélodies sont omniprésentes. Le son de batterie quant à lui, aurait mérité d'être un peu moins triggé surtout pour la grosse caisse, laissant parfois une forte impression de boîte à rythme. Le chanteur évolue dans un registre assez proche de Nevermore en moins rocailleux. On retrouve disséminées ça et là quelques interventions vocales féminines qui permettent d'aérer un peu les compos leur conférant un aspect lyrique sans vouloir trop en faire. J'ai personnellement craqué sur le tubesque " Cantos " qui mélange à ravir le speed de Blind Guardian et les ambiances mélodiques d'In Flames. Paradoxalement, les compos étant un peu longues (on atteint souvent les 7 minutes), l'envie d'écouter l'album en boucle cède vite la place à l'overdose.
Un album varié et original, mais qui nécessite plusieurs écoutes afin de s'immerger totalement dans l'univers de Manticora.
