C’est toujours le même problème : dès qu’un groupe a une personnalité propre et qu’il évolue dans un style distinct, on lui reproche de resservir la même recette. C’est le cas avec FU MANCHU dont le Stoner fait du sur-place.
Les Américains connaissent leur affaire et ne commettent aucune faute de goût : solos envoûtants, production soignée, ambiances riches ; on pourrait s’extasier, s’il ne s’agissait quand même du dixième album. Mais le vrai problème est qu’à la redondance s’ajoute un certain manque de mordant qui rend cet album un peu trop linéaire. Certes on l’écoute sans déplaisir et les morceaux s’enchaînent sans que l’on soupire, mais il manque indéniablement quelque chose, peut-être un grain de folie, un zeste de psychédélique supplémentaire et surtout quelques titres vraiment notables.
Vous l’avez compris, We Must Obey n’est pas franchement mauvais, mais il déçoit lorsqu’on pense que c’est le grand FU MANCHU qui le sort. Car il s’agit sans conteste d’un album secondaire dans une telle discographie qui compte quelques sommets autrement plus palpitants.
Les fans du groupe ne pourront que constater la petite forme des Californiens, quand aux amateurs de Stoner en général, ils se tourneront vers d’autres albums plus convaincants.
