AOR est le projet de Frédéric Slama, un journaliste Français exilé en Californie, passionné de Rock mélodique. Pour son premier album il engage la crème des musiciens du genre : Steve Lukather, Jeff Porcaro, Tommy Denander, Gregg Bisonnette et beaucoup d’autres. Il en résulte un travail extrêmement professionnel, d’une propreté remarquable. L’intervention de chaque instrument est un véritable prodige de subtilité, et la production parvient à donner de l’ampleur à l’ensemble tout en s’attachant à préserver sa subtilité.
Le problème est que cet album contient environ 16 ballades (sur 16 titres, ça fait un beau pourcentage !). Il est vrai que certaines d’entre elles sont franchement réussies mais à moins d’être un inconditionnel du genre, cet album est d’une chiantitude absolue. On enchaîne les mélodies sirupeuses, les rythmes langoureux, les refrains mous en se demandant quand ça va s’arrêter. Le pire étant que l’ensemble n’a pas grand-chose à voir avec le Rock car s’est davantage l’aspect Soul et Pop de l’AOR qui est représenté ici. On a l’impression d’écouter du Lionel Richie, ou d’être dans un ascenseur, ou encore d’écouter de la musique de film de cul. S’est d’un lourd !
Par ailleurs les morceaux sont longs (on dépasse souvent les 5 minutes) et l’on en a vite fait le tour, à l’image de « Caugh Inside Your Heart » dont le refrain se répète en boucle jusqu’à plus soif (et ce n’est que le troisième morceau » !). Les paroles sont aussi des petits bijoux : « Je suis comme un tigre guettant sa proie », je peux vous dire que si le tigre attaque à cette vitesse là, il va pas bouffer souvent !
