Nombreux sont les lieux communs et les images d’Epinal que certains maintiennent vivaces en Occident à l’égard du pays du Soleil Levant, le Japon. Samouraïs, sumotoris (big-up à Chirac !), sushi, mangas et jeux vidéo sont le lot de clichés qui malheureusement demeurent trop ancrés dans les esprits. Pourtant, le Japon ne démérite pas lorsque l’on parle du sujet qui ici nous intéresse : le Metal dans sa globalité. Une kyrielle de groupes nippons émergent à tout va et quels que soient les styles pratiqués : du Black Symphonique plus que honorable de KADENZZA au Power de LOUDNESS en passant par tout ces groupes de Visual Kei, véritable phénomène de mode au Japon, citons au hasard KAGEROU, MOI DIX MOIS, DIR EN GREY. Une fois n’est pas coutume, BEREAVED est un pur groupe de Thrash Metal aux échos Death existant depuis 1997 fondé par un des membre de RITUAL CARNAGE, autre ponte du Metal extrême au pays du Soleil Levant. BEREAVED avait déjà à son actif une démo en 2001 nommée Reclaim. En 2004, les Américano Japonais se lancèrent dans l’enregistrement d’un premier album What The Wolf Brings édité par Frantic Blade Productions, le label du groupe et obtint de meilleures réactions que celles de la démo. Ce mini succès local permit au groupe de signer un contrat avec le label hexagonal Deadsun Records et de pouvoir montrer à la face du monde ce dont BEREAVED est capable avec comme aboutissement le premier effort à l’échelle mondiale, The Spirit Driven by Hate. Voilà pour la fiche d’identité du groupe.
Ce quintet croise dans les eaux troubles et obscures du Thrash Death avec une touche de Black. La scène Suédoise a eu une influence considérable sur ce groupe dans leur façon de délivrer un son similaire de bandes comme NAGLFAR, DARK TRANQUILLITY en moins percutant. Pourtant, si les Maoris portent le deuil de leurs adversaires lors de rencontres de rugby, BEREAVED portent le deuil de leurs auditeurs. Onze titres d’un Thrash Death aux relents Hardcore qui transparaissent à travers les parties vocales de Tetsu Haramura, nettement plus proches d’un quelconque combo de Hardcore sur vitaminé que d’un groupe de Thrash ou de Death. Les morceaux comme le bon « Eruption of Violence » et « pectral Visitation » montrent tout le talent des musiciens, qui sans faire d’esbroufe, sont capables de composer des titres directs et dynamiques. Les compositions sont carrées, sans ornements ni artifices qui ne serviraient à rien. Le tempo se calme avec l’intro de « Our Time Apart », ce pour quelques secondes seulement.
La furie reprend de plus belle. Les rythmiques se veulent rapides et engagées, BEREAVED n’octroie que peu de repos à ses témoins. « Unquenchable Thirst », l’excellente « Redemption Through Pain » et sa rythmique plus lourde que la moyenne sur cet album en font des valeurs sures qui ne peuvent que rencontrer le succès escompté sur scène. Dans l’autre cas, des titres comme « Captive Body, Captive Soul » ou « The Storm Master » sonnent comme déjà entendu et font figure d’ovnis sur cette galette. « Wake With The Moon » sonne comme un titre Black Metal et apporte de la fraîcheur dans un final d’album qui commençait sérieusement à être bavard et ennuyeux. Des mélodies énergiques, soli efficaces, un bon morceau qui clôt l’aventure de cet album de bonne manière.
Durant cinquante minutes environ, BEREAVED délivre là un premier opus complet, travaillé, aux petits défauts comme ce manque de puissance de feu au niveau des guitares et de la basse. Gageons que ces faiblesses seront corrigées et rectifiées sur la prochaine livraison du groupe basé à Yokohama. Un bon album de Thrash Death en somme.
