Cela fait 12 ans que SKELETON CREW aiguise ses guitares alors, forcément, c’est tranchant !
Après les nombreux déboires inhérents aux formations Metal, les Français sortent un album d’une grande maturité dont la finition est extrêmement professionnelle.
SKELETON CREW évolue dans un registre assez complexe puisqu’au Thrash qui sert de fondement sont ajoutés divers éléments qui bâtissent un univers musical singulier : quelques accents Death, des passages très techniques, du Metal gothique, des touches d’Indus,... On sent que le groupe repose - consciemment ou non - sur des influences sûres telles que NEVERMORE, ANNIHILATOR, mais aussi PARADISE LOST ou, plus récemment, SOILWORK et ARCH ENEMY. Toutefois, le groupe s’emploie à bâtir ses propres compositions sans reproduire ces influences mais en les synthétisant.
De gros riffs (souvent même énormes) bombardent en tous sens tandis que le chant, tantôt clair, tantôt guttural, alterne les ambiances. On passe ainsi du Thrash musclé aux atmosphères Dark voire Goth. Unmuted System est donc un album riche et varié mais qui conserve une incroyable cohérence.
Ce mélange des genres n’est peut-être pas totalement nouveau mais il trouve ici une parfaite exécution.
Les enchaînements entre les morceaux sont également très bien faits avec des plages extrêmement courtes, voire avec des transitions, qui donnent l’impression que les titres se fondent les uns dans les autres.
On peut juste reprocher à certains morceaux d’être un peu longs. On dépasse souvent allègrement les 5 minutes et l’on peut avoir le sentiment que le groupe nous a déjà tout dit au bout de 4’30. Mais que l’on se rassure, ces quelques redondances n’émoussent pas le tranchant de l’ensemble et le plaisir demeure intact.
