PRIMAL AGE faisait parti de la vague de groupes qui ont instauré le Hardcore New School en France à la fin des années 90, aux cotés de KICKBACK, RIGHT FOR LIFE ou encore DROWNING. Participant même aux fameuses compilations d’Overcome Record, ils se sont rapidement fait un nom sur la scène Française. Combinant finement la hargne du Hardcore et la puissance du Metal (et oui à l’époque ce n’était pas encore un cliché), ils ont partagé la scène avec NAPALM DEATH, NOSTROMO, CONVERGE ou encore CALIBAN. Pour diverses raisons, le groupe a splitté peu de temps après. En 2005, le groupe revient finalement, relançant la machine d’antan.
Première constatation, après une courte intro le son est toujours aussi gras et lourd. On a bien à faire au même PRIMAL AGE qu’avant. Pas de doute. Nos amies les Mosh Parts ne se font pas désirer longtemps et on rentre immédiatement dans le Pit. Le son n’a rien perdu de son efficacité. Les riffs guitares sont toujours bien aiguisés. La batterie joue subtilement sur les rythmes claquant du Hardcore tout en alignant des plans Death assez bourrins. On est donc assez satisfait de cette première compo pour le moins efficace. On enchaîne sur la seconde et le chant hurlé fait enfin son apparition. Les cris se font vraiment percutants et très violents. C’est sans rappeler ceux du chanteur d’ARKANGEL, d’ailleurs l’ensemble sonne dans la même veine que ce dernier groupe.
A première vue donc, on pourrait être assez satisfait de ce retour. Cependant, on se rend rapidement compte que le groupe reprend la même chose qu’à leurs débuts, sans y rajouter quoique ce soit. Le problème est qu’aujourd’hui tout ça est devenu assez cliché. Certes c’est efficace et plutôt bien fait, mais c’est très redondant. On passera sur la pseudo tentative de chant clair sur « Reflexion » qui est complètement ratée… Une fois habitué aux vocaux hurlés, un certain ennui se fait sentir. Les mêmes ingrédients sont réutilisés à l’infini (et ont d’ailleurs été utilisé par nombre d’autres groupes du genre). Tout devient prévisible. De plus l’album ne se rattrape pas sur la longueur vu qu’il ne contient que 10 titres, dont une intro bidon et deux morceaux rejoués en live, ce qui fait au total seulement 7 chansons... Maigre non ?
Bref, je conseillerais cet album aux fans du genre avant tout. C’est loin d’être un indispensable il est vrai, mais il contient une certaine dose d’énergie assez agréable pendant quelques minutes. Avis aux intéressés…
