From Ashes est le premier album d'un groupe hollandais baptisé SEVEN STEPS OF DENIALS. Tout comme sa musique, ce groupe est très cliché. Sur la page facebook, on découvre cinq gamins en T-Shirt de groupe posant dans ce qui ressemble à une cave. Au premier rang, ils ont placé les types qui ont l'air le plus méchant (c'est à dire les barbus) mais comme aucun des protagonistes n'a pris la peine de se donner une attitude arrogante et badass, tout ce petit monde ressemble à un cageot de lapins de six semaines. Je sais qu'il n'y a pas des centaines de manière de présenter un groupe mais parfois, pas d'image vaut mieux qu'une image peu avantageuse. Vous me trouvez cynique, vous estimez qu'on ne juge pas un livre à sa couverture ? Et bien donnons sa chance au produit, musique maestro !
Si j'avais reçu ce disque par courrier j'aurais pu penser qu'il s'était perdu dans les méandres du tri postal pendant une ou deux décennies. Mais la magie d'internet ayant résolu ces aléas de distribution, il faut se rendre à l'évidence : si ce disque paraît daté, c'est juste parce que SEVEN STEPS OF DENIALS a quelques métros de retard. Voici un groupe qui est né du mauvais côté de la Manche et de l'an 2000. 7SOD est fondé en 2008 à Harleem aux Pays-Bas. Après quelques années d'instabilité, le line-up se stabilise sur une formation à cinq : bassiste, batterie, deux guitares, un chanteur. Leur debut EP sort fin 2011. Il est remarqué par un label italien qui propose au gang d'enregistrer un LP. From Ashes voit le jour en mai 2014. Le label a fait suffisamment confiance à SEVEN STEP OF DENIAL pour leur laisser sortir un debut album durant plus d'une heure. 65 minutes, c'est long. Surtout quand la musique n'est pas démente.
Oh, il y a un peu de level dans le groupe, surtout du côté des guitaristes, mais cet atout se transforme bien vite en tare quand chaque morceau est prétexte à un interminable solo. Rendons son dû à César, l'ensemble est bien exécuté et bien produit et s'il avait été un poil plus court, le disque serait tout à fait digeste.
Au niveau des inspirations, la NWOBHM n'est jamais très loin du coeur de SEVEN STEP OF DENIAL. Les progressions mélodiques des chansons rappellent un petit peu celles de IRON MAIDEN. Mais hélas, les bataves sont loin d'avoir le talent des anglais pour développer des ambiances épiques. C'est la raison pour laquelle ces soli interminables arrivent comme des cheveux sur la soupe. Quant au chant, il emprunte aux années 80 des intonations et trémolos poussiéreux pour minauder dans un anglais très scolaire des lyrics faiblards, comme savent si mal les écrire les groupes dont l'anglais n'est pas la langue maternelle.
En synthèse, ce projet poussif a bénéficié d'un coup de projecteur grâce au financement de l'album par ce mystérieux label qui n'est pas le distributeur du disque. Ce n'est pas de la mauvaise musique, il y a quelques bonnes idées ici et là, les influences sont assez gommées, les gars touchent leur bille avec leurs instruments, mais tout cela manque de tripes et de folie. Ce n'est pas parce que vous avez tous les ingrédients dans la cuisine que vous réussirez une gibelotte de homard et son tournicoti de légumes. De la même manière, From Ashes est un projet qui réunit de bons ingrédients mais SEVEN STEPS OF DENIALS peine à en faire sortir quelque chose qui démarque le gang du lot.
