C'est l'histoire de trois copains qui montent un groupe de Metal. Dans leur petite ville de Tidewater (Virginie), ils commencent à jouer de la musique ensemble en 2003. Il y a un batteur (Lenny Hines), un bassiste (Mark Cave) et un chanteur / guitariste (TR Morton). Ce dernier a un timbre de voix quasi identique à celui d'Ozzy Osbourne. Un atout qui pourrait se transformer en handicap si le gang appuyait trop sur la pédale de la nostalgie. Par exemple en voulant trop sonner comme le SAB. Les trois faucons de la liberté sortent leur premier EP en 2007. Un Stoner Rock mâtiné de Heavy Psych, bien gras, avec un son fuzzé, une batterie naturelle et quelques beaux solo de guitare. On retrouve le même genre d'influences que pour la plupart des jeunes groupes de Stoner et le même genre de son. Une musique agréable mais pas révolutionnaire. Trois albums suivent Sunlight (2008), Freedom Hawk (2009) et Holding On (2011).
Jusque là, rien de bien original. Ce genre de parcours, c'est assez courant, non ? Arrivé au troisième album, on s'attend à ce que le groupe sorte son album de la maturité. A moins qu'il ne proposer une évolution majeure de sa musique, un grand saut vers autre chose. Comme passer d'un Stoner Psychédélique à un Heavy Metal pur et dur, à l'instar de MONSTER MAGNET avec Powertrip. C'est à peu près l'évolution qui marque la carrière de FREEDOM HAWK avec Holding On.
Le groupe tourne le dos à son Stoner planant pour un album franchement Heavy Metal.
Sur leur quatrième méfait, Into Your Mind, les aigles reviennent à un son seventies tout en conservant l'axe Heavy. Into Your Mind est un opus revival dans la veine de WITCHCRAFT. Ce qui fait la particularité du groupe, et peut rebuter, c'est cette ressemblance frappante avec le son de BLACK SABBATH. Sur certains morceaux, on croirait vraiment que c'est le Master of Darkness qui tient le micro et que Tony, Geezer et Bill l'accompagnent.
Pour ouvrir les hostilités, la formation sort la grosse artillerie "Blood Red Sky" et son intro catchy rappelant le "Black Betty" de RAM JAM, sa rythmique excitée, son riff autoroute bien gras, son joli petit solo de gratte, c'est clairement le son qui donne envie d'aller plus loin. La suite est mi figue, mi raisin. La musique est extra mais cette ressemblance avec le SAB gâche passablement l'écoute (notamment "Journey Home", "Lost in space" et "On your knees".) On a beau essayer d'en faire abstraction et déguster ce bon Heavy Metal bien groovy, il y a toujours un petit solo, un petit break, un jeu de rythmique qui rappelle furieusement le son des pères du Metal.
Voila un groupe qui cherche à se renouveler, dont le son évolue d'album en album, mais qui se fait pourtant piéger par une ressemblance trop marquée avec ses inspirateurs. Le ressenti serait probablement un peu différent si TR Morton ne chantait pas comme Ozzy, mais puisque les musiciens forcent le trait avec une musique à l'avenant, on ne peut pas croire à une coïncidence.
C'est pourtant quand le groupe s'affranchit de ce pesant héritage qu'il est le plus brillant ("Blood Red Sky" ou "Radar" et son superbe solo de guitare, psychédélique à souhait).
Depuis quelques années, les américains sont perçus comme un groupe qui "fait du SABBATH", ils ont pourtant suffisamment de talent et de créativité pour proposer une expérience un peu affranchie de ce glorieux modèle.
