CARPATHIAN n'avait surement rien à perdre en 2006 mais aujourd'hui, qu'ont-ils encore à gagner ? Reste t-il du terrain à conquérir pour leur Hardcore zébré de Punk, de relents post-mélodiques et de ce feeling so urban, sweat capuche à l'appui, propre à certains groupes qu'ils remercient chaleureusement dans le booklet de Nothing To Lose ? I KILLED THE PROM QUEEN, EVERGREEN TERRACE, COMEBACK KID, BLEEDING THROUGH, EVERY TIME I DIE, SILVERSTEIN, PARKWAY DRIVE, 50 LIONS. Ceux-là aussi ont eu leur part du butin. C'était en 2006, souvenez-vous. Sept ans plus tard, après une Isolation forcée (2008), après un Wanderlust en point d'orgue (2010), quid d'une carrière qui s'est singulièrement effritée ? Pourtant, CARPATHIAN avait un jeu très intéressant entre ses mains. Un jeu qui aurait pu lui permettre de ne pas se faire doubler si facilement. Et voici pourquoi.
En 25 petites minutes, certes relativement ridicules pour un premier album mais excusables quand il s'agit d'un groupe de pur HxC, les Australiens ont fait étalage de façon fracassante des plus gros stéréotypes du genre, avec néanmoins une certaine maitrise de la situation. Si CARPATHIAN avait inventé la poudre, leur nom ne serait pas qu'une vulgaire couche d'oignon qu'on découvre par hasard en épluchant les autres. Ce qui explique aussi pourquoi en 2013, Nothing To Lose n'a pas franchement vieilli. Un tel album pourrait toujours sortir aujourd'hui sans qu'on n'y trouve à redire sur sa fraicheur. Il ne manquait à ces garçons qu'un peu de jugeote et d'expérience pour espérer jouer des coudes. Car l'efficacité brute du Hardcore est omniprésente, au détour de ces guitares massives et franches, de cette vitesse rythmique plutôt inhérente au mouvement Punk et de ce chant punchy soutenu épisodiquement par des chœurs qui font très NYHC dans l'esprit. Certains titres jouissent également d'une belle couleur mélodique, comme "Who The Fuck Taught You Snaps ?" qui, pour le coup, se rapproche plus d'un bon morceau de PARKWAY DRIVE. Pour autant, difficile d'affirmer que Nothing To Lose cherche délibérément à se diversifier. C'est toujours plus ou moins les mêmes tonalités, les mêmes riffs, le même fighting spirit qui règne et au-delà de la puissance de base du Hardcore, aucun relief ne vient rendre la surface de cet opus moins lisse. Si tu l'écoutes avec l'envie d'en découdre, tu trouveras surement ton bonheur. Encore faut-il avoir cette envie, ce qui me laisse penser que CARPATHIAN s'adressait avec ce premier album à une petite frange de coreux locaux qui domptaient les spots en s'enfilant Killing With A Smile une fois de retour sur la terre ferme. De par son attitude, son déroulement, son contenu, Nothing To Lose ne provoque malheureusement que des idées reçues et des caricatures. Son explosivité ne suffira pas à masquer cette lacune, dont ils assument surement l'origine.
Et c'est tant mieux pour eux. Après tout, de l'aveu même de certains musiciens qui font de la scène Hardcore ce qu'elle est (cf. les interviews de BIOHAZARD, DO OR DIE ou de SPITBACK publiées en ces pages), cette musique n'a pas pour vocation première de se renouveler. On trouvera toujours en elle ce feeling si particulier qui rend Nothing To Lose, malgré ses errances et sa banalité, conforme aux attentes. Avis aux amateurs.
