Je préfère vous le dire d'entrée : je ne suis pas du tout rassuré à l'idée de devoir pénétrer dans ces catacombes qui doivent sûrement contenir leurs lots d'ossements et autres vestiges macabres. Allez, avec un peu de chance, nous tomberons sur un fabuleux trésor, qui sait ? Vous connaissez celui de DARKENHÖLD ? On raconte qu'il scintille de milles feux et qu'il pourra combler quiconque aura la chance de tomber dessus. Cette fameuse trouvaille nommée Echoes From The Stone Keeper, est arrivée en 2012. Ses créateurs, eux, ont vu le jour en 2008 et avaient déjà sorti un joyau en 2010. Ce présent sera-t-il donc d'une richesse abondante ? C'est ce que nous allons voir.
Après une petite introduction lugubre, nous voilà en phase avec cette ambiance d'une noirceur enivrante. DARKENHÖLD pratique un Black Metal assez agréable puisqu'il se veut à la fois inquiétant et apaisant, en partie grâce aux nappes d'orgue qui enveloppent les morceaux afin de leur donner cette apparence si brumeuse et atmosphérique. La galette est dans l'ensemble extrêmement homogène, et il est donc assez difficile de déceler une piste qui sortirait du lot. Echoes From The Stone Keeper est avant tout un album qu'il faut écouter d'une traite et autant de fois que possible. Les instruments savent à merveille matérialiser des ambiances moyenâgeuses, à tel point que l'on a vite tendance à se retrouver dans un donjon dont les murs suintent d'eau et de moisissures. Seuls les vocaux criards, calibrés pour ce style, ne rivalisent pas vraiment d'ingéniosité, même s'il faut bien admettre qu'ils apportent un réel relief aux compos et les affuble d'une aura malsaine. Mais dans le fond, DARKENHÖLD reste une formation assez créative et ne se contente pas de suivre les schémas typiques du style. Ils font l'effort d'aérer leur jeu de temps en temps avec quelques parties à la flûte où à l'acoustique ("March Of The Sylvan Beasts") apportant une légère touche Pagan qui n'est pas sans déplaire. L'interlude psychédélique est elle aussi une magnifique preuve de la pensée créatrice des Niçois sous ses sonorités dignes d'un "Rundgang Um Die Transzendentale Saule Der Singularitat" de BURZUM (format compressé bien évidemment).
En somme, de la haine, DARKENHÖLD en fait preuve. De l'originalité ? Peut-être un peu moins. En tout cas, il a l'avantage de retranscrire les grandes lignes d'un Black Metal qui peine à se renouveler après tant d'années. Nous avons ici un album extrêmement plaisant à écouter pour tout fan du genre. Si A Passage To The Towers… montrait les débuts d'une carrière prometteuse, Echoes From The Stone Keeperconfirme cette idée. Apportant quelques mélodies de temps à autre, cette galette risque bien de vous faire voyager dans le temps. Cramponnez-vous !
