GRIMUS (usa) - Gutter Earth (2010)

Demain, les Etats-Unis d’Amérique vont choisir leur 45ème président. Et peu importe l’heureux élu, j’espère qu’il fera quelque chose pour le Deathcore. Un geste, une loi, n’importe quoi. Mais par pitié, si on pouvait éviter de voir proliférer des groupes de la trempe de GRIMUS, ce serait franchement un grand pas en avant. Ces garçons nous viennent du New-Jersey. Et mis à part le fait qu’ils embourbent cette scène d’où ne se démarquent pas que les plus valeureux, leur utilité est secondaire. Deux EP au compteur, aucun album digne de ce nom, on attend donc d’avoir une preuve concrète de leur légitimité. Si elle consiste en un vulgaire copier-coller de tout ce qui a déjà pu se faire, on est servi. Gutter Earth, hélas, ne nous donnera même pas l’occasion de montrer la facette la plus magnanime de notre caractère. Le vide sidéral qui le constitue sera un obstacle, et pas des moindres.
Comme on pouvait s’y attendre, ça démarre à fond. Un roulement de batterie plus loin et « In The Gutter » s’est déjà embourbé dans la médiocrité d’un Deathcore en simili-violence. La bestialité primaire de cet avant-propos doublé de vocaux très impressionnants évoque la vélocité et l’appétit d’un AS YOU DROWN. Sauf que GRIMUS ne mettra que quelques secondes à se relâcher. Après 90 secondes, un premier breakdown éléphantesque, THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA-like, pointe le bout de son nez. Malgré son éclectisme tout relatif, cette première compo déçoit car elle se concentre sur une efficacité inexistante, au détriment de rares effluves mélodiques pourtant agréables. Un peu plus Death Metal dans l’esprit, « Friends For(N)ever » accentue leurs lacunes techniques. A l’instar d’« In The Gutter », son milieu possède un passage un peu plus aéré de fort bon aloi. Mais ces dispositions sont éparses et épisodiques alors même qu’on aimerait que toute cette rondelle soit basée dessus. GRIMUS fait les mauvais choix, guidé dans l’erreur par un batteur tentaculaire mais au registre désespérément fade. A quoi bon cette brutalité de façade ? N’y a-t-il pas déjà eu des quintaux de groupes qui s’y sont essayé sans succès ? Il faut croire que la malbouffe inspire. Et malgré ça, je crois sincèrement que ces loubards sont capables de bien mieux. Rebelote sur « The Situation », quand un passage technique et brossé vient déployer leur talent à 1’30. Il durera douze seconde, montre en main. Comme une étrange particularité pour un groupe tristement banal, on en vient à attendre l’éclaircie qui illumine chaque compo. C’est un détroit, un bras de terre entre deux océans de suffisance. Ou plutôt d’insuffisance. Gutter Earth durera un gros quart d’heure et c’est malheureusement bien assez. J’ose à peine imaginer les superlatifs que j’emploierais pour un full-lenght de ce calibre. Surement que je préférerais m’abstenir.
Je réalise un peu tardivement que je me fais du mal. J’ai toujours cette flamme qui brule en moi, ce désir de tomber sur la perle et de pouvoir vous en parler comme personne d’autre. Ce ne sera pas GRIMUS. Cette meute est bien trop naïve et inoffensive pour pouvoir prétendre à quoi que ce soit de concret. Comme chaque groupe qui se met en chasse, le désir de traquer est omniprésent, mais la violence employée pour achever la proie est maladroite. Il y a beaucoup d’énergie de perdue pour par grand-chose… Monsieur Romney, monsieur Obama, je vous implore, délivrez-nous de ce mal.
