STONE COLD QUEEN (se) - A Tribute (2001)

Le CD en main, je râlais tout seul (je suis un peu ronchon) pour 3 raisons:
1. Je n’ai jamais aimé QUEEN.
2. J’en ai marre des tributes. J’avais engagé 2 tueurs pour dessouder Bob Kulick (le type qui est à l’origine de cette averse d’albums hommages) mais ils l’on manqué.
3. Je suis un peu ronchon.
Et puis je me suis réjoui pour 3 raisons:
1. Je me suis souvenu que je n’avais pas payé ce CD.
2. La liste des artistes est à tomber à la renverse, jugez plutôt : Geoff Tate, Glenn Hughes, JL Turner, Jack Russell pour le chant ; Steve Stevens, Marty Friedman, Reb Beach, Steve Lukather, Jake E. Lee à la guitare, plus Matt Sorum, Billy Sheehan, Carmine Appice, Stuart Hamm,… et je ne peux pas tous les citer mais il reste quelques bonnes vieilles célébrités, croyez-moi.
3. “Stone Cold Crazy” débute cet album, et ça, c’est une bonne raison pour se dérider. Surtout que cette version “musclée” est franchement convaincante.
Je suis finalement revenu à ma première impression pour 3 raisons:
1. La première impression est toujours la bonne, et puis je suis un peu ronchon.
2. Le travail est remarquable et d’une grande finesse, mais comme sur la plupart des tributes il manque singulièrement d’âme. Et le défilé de stars devient assez pathétique lorsqu’on réalise au fil des titres qu’à tout prendre, on préfère QUEEN !
3. “We Will Rock You” complètement reliftée, très différente de l’originale, est une très bonne surprise (si vous êtes fan de QUEEN, n’écoutez pas) et “Stone Cold Crazy” parviennent à peine à donner des couleurs à un album un peu fadasse où j’aurais aimé voir figurer d’autres titres plus propices à être repris.
