Ma première et unique confrontation avec le Metal Indus déjanté et fluorescent de PUNISH YOURSELF fut lors d’un petit festival local. Mon impression d’alors avait été que ça avait l’air très sympa, mais que le son beaucoup trop fort (alors que d’autres groupes du même acabit étaient passés et avaient eu un son très correct et surtout audible) avait tout gâché. Il restera par contre, comme pour beaucoup qui en parlent encore, l’image du polissage de nichons, genre d’image qui ne peut s’effacer, même avec le temps.
Devant cette partielle déception, il me fallait quand même essayer d’entrer d’une manière ou d’une autre dans le monde merveilleux et coloré de ces toulousains fous furieux. Quoi de mieux alors que se laisser entrainer dans cette Pink Panther Party, dernière née des industries PY Manufacture ©. Ils ne sont pas forcément nombreux les groupes français qui s’essayent à l’Indus, ou du moins à l’Indus de qualité. Mais quand on tombe sur une introduction du genre de « … Than A Thousnd Suns », on ne peut nier que PUNISH en fait indéniablement partie. C’est froid, mécanique, huileux, dosé au millimètre dans la montée en puissance vers « Shiva Only Is God ». D’ailleurs, ce morceau ne pourra que ravir les amateurs. De grosses guitares qui soutiennent une ambiance dansante et énergique. Du bon Indus. Du grand Indus. Mais on ne peut s’arrêter à ces deux seuls morceaux pour juger. « End Of The Western World » est un titre rapide dans une veine MINISTRY qu’on ne peut renier. Monotone au possible, ce titre aurait peut-être dû être amputé de quelques dizaines de secondes pour ne pas lasser. Par contre, au niveau violence, il est loin, très loin derrière « This Is My Body, This Is My Gasoline », brûlot de violence qui martèle les tympans tout en invitant à des mosh parts du feu de Dieu. Les parties ultra rapides ne sont pourtant pas simplement des moments de brutalité mais, soutenus par des chœurs, portent quand même une bonne ambiance. « Born in Thorns / Torn to Pieces » est pour moi le point d’orgue de cet album. Une nouvelle fois, il y a une montée en puissance totalement maîtrisée qui, aidée par un riff simple, mais suffisant, nous fait entrer complètement dans le morceau. Un début et une fin plus calme, qui peut permettre de ralentir un peu le rythme pendant en concert, qui encadrent un morceau plus lent mais qui permet une communion entre le public et le groupe font de ce morceau un titre qui doit être un pur moment en concert. On notera tout de même que certains titres ne sont que des introductions pour le titre suivant. Bon, on peut se demander pourquoi ces introductions ne sont pas intégrées aux morceaux, mais, finalement, on s’en fou un peu. « Satan Buddies » est un titre instrumental long, sans élément métallique. Un sample saccadé et hypnotique servi avec talent. Voilà la recette d’un bon titre. On peut aussi parler du dernier titre, « Welcome To Now », qui dure un peu plus de dix minutes. Lent, une nouvelle fois monotone, il clôt, je trouve, très bien l’album.
Effectivement, Pink Panther Party n’est pas un modèle de violence, même si certains titres sont bien agressifs. Par contre, c’est un modèle d’Indus de qualité, d’inventivité et de talent. Ça donne plus qu’envie de découvrir le reste de la discographie du groupe.
