Cela fait quelques années que je n’ai pas écouté de groupe dans lequel Liv Kristin officiait, depuis qu’elle n’est plus dans THEATER OF TRAGEDY en fait. Pourtant, j’avais gardé le souvenir de sa voix, chaleureuse et envoutante. Du coup, quand l’opportunité d’écouter le dernier album de LEAVES’ EYES, Njord, s’est présentée à moi, j’ai sauté dessus (et elle a eu mal l’opportunité, je peux vous le dire). Donc, point de comparaison avec les opus précédents que je ne connais pas, mais un regard vierge de tout a priori.
On passera bien entendu sur les commentaires sur la pochette qui tendrait à affirmer que tous les groupes de Metal Gothique à chanteuse mettent en avant leurs attributs féminins enfermés dans des corsets taille fillette et on se concentrera sur le plus important : la musique. L’album commence par le titre éponyme, épique à souhait, qui commence par une embardée dans les fjords norvégiens. Liv prend ses marques avec sa voix enchanteresse et puissante (sauf qu’elle n’a pas besoin de hurler pour qu’elle soit puissante sa voix, elle). Ce morceau promet un Metal qui lorgnerait plus vers l’épique et le grandiose que vers le tout Gothique. Pourtant, dés « My Destiny », la tension redescend pour un titre qui est plus « easy listening » par son côté Pop Gothique. Ce n’est pas aussi mielleux que « The Holy Bond » toutefois, et ça se laisse même écouter, mais on n’est plus non plus dans le grandiose du titre précédent. « Irish Rain » est clairement grand public, puisque sans distorsion, et pourrait permettre de faire connaître le groupe à une frange de la population qui ne l’écouterait pas sinon. Bizarrement, ce n’est pas le titre qui passe le plus mal, même si le côté irlandais aurait pu se faire plus prononcé. « Morgenland » est l’inévitable titre calme d’un album de Metal à chanteuse. Mais il apporte une pause pour se plonger sans autre distraction dans la voix de Liv. « Forya’s Theme » est le morceau épique symphonique que le groupe pourra porter haut et fort plus tard. Les plans se succèdent, sans perdre une seconde l’auditeur pour tenir les plus de huit minutes qu’il dure. Entre originalité et Metal Gothique plus classique, il sait captiver pour clôturer une écoute plaisante.
On peut dire que ce Njord est agréable à l’écoute, mais pèche souvent par manque d’originalité. Certains morceaux sortent du lot, mais certains autres font de l’ombre à ce disque. Pourtant, l’impression globale qui en restera est celle d’un disque plaisant dans lequel on se replongera de temps en temps.
