Je les ai vus venir de loin, les détracteurs réguliers de CALIBAN. Il est vrai que depuis un petit moment, nos amis allemands ne faisaient que de nous proposer un Metalcore de seconde zone, peu inspiré et rébarbatif, illustré par des déceptions comme The Undying Darkness ou The Awakening (qui était loin d’être un réveil). Alors à l’approche de la sortie de ce Say Hello To Tragedy, sixième de leurs efforts et de toute l’opération marketing qui l’a entouré, les réflexions fusaient. Parmi elles, « Andy ressemble de plus en plus à un putain d’emo », « cette pochette est putain d’hideuse », « c’est quoi ce putain de nom ? », « j’espère que putain, ce seront pas eux qui ouvriront IN FLAMES le 24 novembre au Bataclan » ou encore « putain, j’aime pas CALIBAN ». Comme vous le voyez, plein d’arguments construits et polis. Tout sur la forme, rien sur le fond. Alors oui, Andy s’est fait reluqué comme un emo en transe. Oui, la pochette est une horreur sans nom (en même temps, c’est signé Bastian Sobtzick qui a bossé pour CALLEJON, HEAVEN SHALL BURN et WAR FROM A HARLOTS MOUTH…). Oui, le nom du disque est minable. Oui, j’espère pour le bon déroulement de la soirée d’un collègue estimé qu’ils ne seront pas présents le 24 novembre en ouverture d’IN FLAMES. Mais moi, j’aime CALIBAN ! Et vous savez la meilleure ? Ils sont revenus !
C’est un fait établi, ce Say Hello To Tragedy est très probablement leur œuvre la plus aboutie depuis Vent. Et encore, huit années séparent les deux sorties ainsi que tout le chemin qui a été effectué depuis. « 24 Years » prend déjà très vite à la gorge. On ne sait pas trop de quoi ils parlent, mais ils semblent avoir été affectés par ces « 24 années d’isolation, de noirceur, de séparation, de douleur, d’ignorance, de haine ». Au fond, on s’en fout. Tout ce qui compte c’est ce putain (à mon tour d’être grossier) de Metalcore teuton burné à la Benzédrine ! Les riffs sont massifs, lourds, usants. Andy de sa voix la plus arrachée nous conte le désespoir et Denis Schmidt, également guitariste distille de ses cordes vocales légères et cristallines des notes claires parfaitement dosées. Une syllabe suffit parfois, comme sur l’énorme « Calibans Revenge » et son intro éléphantesque de technicité couplé d’un refrain planant. Aussi avez-vous déjà essayé de déclarer votre flamme sur du Metalcore ? « Love Song » sera parfaite pour ça. Les lyrics, écrits par Andy Dörner prennent aux tripes. C’est une vraie déclaration d’amour prolongée dans le paroxysme par la présence vocale de Flo Velten (MACHINEMADE GOD). Le côté technique s’affirme de plus en plus au fil des secondes. Ainsi l’introduction de « End This Sickness » et celle de « Unleash Your Voice » reprennent le filon initié par « Calibans Revenge ». C’est une progression, une avancée dans la création artistique. Mais que serait un bon disque de Metalcore sans ses « ballades » ? CALIBAN nous en refourgue une, « All I Gave » et une demie avec « Walk Like The Dead ». La première est assez fluette dans le refrain mais lourde dans les guitares qui oppressent l’auditeur. La seconde possède en son cœur une grosse accélération qui nuance son propos. Notons également le solo signé Sky Hoff (ex-MACHINEMADE GOD) sur « The Degenation Of Humanity », la partie vocale de Dennis Diehl (BUTTERFLY COMA) sur « Liar » et la reprise de « In The Name Of Progression » du groupe UNBROKEN. Cette accumulation de détails rend au final Say Hello To Tragedy plus riche et varié que prévu. Si on y ajoute les deux enregistrements live présents sur l’édition digipack de « Forsaken Horizon » et de « Between The Worlds » au With Full Force Summer Open Air 2008, on arrive à un résultat qui dépasse les espérances de tous.
On les avait annoncés comme étant morts, cliniquement décédés. Mais ils sont bien vivants. Ce dernier CALIBAN avait tout pour n’être qu’une déception de plus. Et il était bien parti pour. C’était sans compter sur leur immense talent, la motivation et la rage de la bête blessée, qui, sans réinventer pour autant le style, impose sa présence et sa fougue. Maîtres ils étaient, maîtres ils sont, maîtres ils resteront. Bonjour, tragédie.
