Si je vous dis « Texas » ; vous me répondez… ? « Country, chili con carne, Tex-Mex ». Mais non, bande de gourmands, je vous parle ici de trucs qui tachent (quoiqu’avec le chili…), comme PANTERA, « Massacre à la Tronçonneuse », ou encore AS EDEN BURNS. Et oui, AS EDEN BURNS, ce sont cinq texans (quatre maintenant, vu que le chanteur a laissé sa place), qui jouent, sur ce premier album, un Death Metal Mélodique puissant. Puissant oui, mais pas méchant une seule seconde !
Derrière cette pochette à la croisée entre une de Doom (pour les teintes) et une de black (pour le logo), se cachent des titres formatés et vite rébarbatifs. Ainsi « The Great Celestial Delusion », le premier titre et éponyme de l’album, annonce aussitôt la couleur : le groupe a préféré misé sur la brutalité. Pour cela, il ne cache pas ses influences qu’il puise directement chez AT THE GATES et THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER. Quelle audace de vouloir concurrencer l’hégémonie de ces deux groupes ! Et à tort, qui plus est ! Cette prétendue hymne à la brutalité, pour le peu que l’on se donne le mal de l’analyser, sonne complètement creux. Pourtant, les deux guitaristes nous gratifient d’un enchaînement de riffs coriaces, et de soli exécutés sans anicroche (« Ever Again », « Guilds »). Plutôt orientés vers la technicité, ils se montrent pleinement capables. La basse, quant à elle, mixée de façon à ce qu’elle ne soit pas noyée par les autres instruments, donne une consistance appréciable aux morceaux. Un très bon travail a également été fait sur la batterie qui percute méchamment d’un bout à l’autre à l’autre de l’album, même si l’ami Lee Eubanks semble être un fétichiste des cymbales. Côté chant, rien de transcendant : un chant hurlé, lorgnant de très près ce qui se fait dans le Deathcore, accompagné de certains passages en growl, qui, malgré leur emploi limité, se veulent convenablement maîtrisés et instaurent une certaine profondeur qui nous rappelle la vieille époque du Death Mélo « made in Gothenburg », comme sur « Endless Rebirth », « Conceptual Decay » ou « The Golden Age ». Cependant ce chant, qui semble être l’élément phare de leur prétendue brutalité, s’étale devant tous les autres instruments ; résultat : on n’entend que ça, et le talent des guitaristes n’est dévoilé au grand jour que lors de certaines accalmies où on leur laisse champ libre.
Et puis, le problème majeur, sur The Great Celestial Delusion est l’originalité, ainsi que la composition des morceaux. Autant certains groupes, loin d’être les porte-drapeaux d’un nouveau genre, arrivent tout de même à se rendre intéressants ; autant AS EDEN BURNS est loin de marquer les esprits. Bien que le groupe nous démontre qu’il sait manier les instruments, on a l’impression de réentendre une énième fois ce qui avait déjà été repris maintes et maintes fois. Les compos sont également sans grandes surprises et prévisibles ; le confirme l’enchaînement entre le final acoustique de « Ever Again », et le début de « Conceptual Decay ».
Vous l’aurez compris, ce disque ne tourne chez moi que le temps de faire cette chronique. Avoir le talent, c’est bien. Avoir la technique, aussi. Mais sans personnalité derrière, cela n’a aucun intérêt. Un album vite écouté, vite oublié.
