Chouette, encore des poètes ! Visionnaire le p’tit Stef ? Presque autant que ce pauvre type de la pochette, crochets dans la chair, orbites désertes donc yeux bandés, ingurgitant on ne sait quelle substance extra-terrestre. Qu’a-t-il fait pour en arriver à ce point ? Peut-être était-ce un fin amateur de Prokofief, Orff, Khatchaturian et autre Vivaldi. Ou peut-être que c’est ça, « l’âge moderne de l’esclavage ». Qu’importe puisqu’ici, THE MODERN AGE SLAVERY, c’est une troupe de cinq petits ritals pratiquant un Deathcore sans vergogne et respectant au pied de la lettre la loi du Talion. Résurrection récente des défunts BROWBEAT, ils tirent avec Damned To Blindness une première décharge de chevrotine dans nos encéphales atrophiés. Hémorragie cérébrale.
Il était prévisible que le quintette n’invente pas l’eau chaude avec ce disque. Les structures sont d’une simplicité presque aussi extrême que la musique. Et pourtant, elle n’a rien de très conventionnelle. Je ne sais pas si c’est leur nationalité (sur laquelle mon regard à totalement changé depuis un évènement personnel encore plus récent que l’encensement du dernier RAINTIME) qui me fais cet effet mais dès les premières secondes de l’intense « Red Lines Of Obsession », je me dis que les transalpins vont réussir quelque chose de grand et que je vais prendre sévèrement mon pied. Ca commence d’ailleurs à devenir une habitude avec les italiens, et surtout avec les italiennes. Mais passons ce détail pour disséquer la piste éponyme de l’album. Eh bien que voulez-vous, j’ai l’honneur de vous annoncer qu’elle a intégré le cercle ultra-fermé des compositions qui transitent dans mes oreilles via ce merveilleux petit bijou de technologie créé par la multinationale à la pomme (pas de marques). Les breaks sont marqués, juste comme je les aime et suffisamment pour déclencher un bon headbang. Je n’ose même pas m’imaginer pareille folie en live. Tous les éléments sont rodés, à commencer par les guitares, qui sonnent de manière apocalyptique et le jeu de batterie, sobre mais efficace. Le martèlement des cymbales est, à ce propos, à l’origine de bon nombre de violents mouvements de tête. Vocalement parlant, l’expérience proposée est également intéressante puisque les rugissements de Gio peuvent même devenir audibles à condition d’une ouïe fine. C’est toujours agréable d’avoir affaire à un chant moins linéaire et moins porcin qu’a l’accoutumée. Ne vous attendez cependant pas à une grosse surprise, ça reste très gras et profond. Aucun répit, à part peut-être ces satanées voice-overs. Mais je m’en serais bien passé. Difficile de dire pour autant qu’on s’ennuie. Si les corps des compositions sont charpentés, chacune possède sa propre personnalité et jouit d’une mélodicité bien marquée par les variations dans le jeu de cordes. THE MODERN AGE SLAVERY se permet même le luxe d’achever le massacre (au bon sens du terme) avec une cover des mythiques ENTOMBED, « Wolverine Blues ». Une reprise de bon ton, sans grande originalité mais à la sauce Deathcore, ce qui induit une approche plus brutale et une facette plus inédite du morceau. A la mi-chemin entre le dispensable et l’indispensable.
Très bonne surprise qu’est ce Damned To Blindness. Un opus construit et malsain au possible qui ravira n’importe quel amateur de bonne chair. La conclusion ici tirée est plus qu’ambigu, car THE MODERN AGE SLAVERY signe une si bonne rondelle qu’elle nous amène à nous interroger sur un fondement de la liberté. Moi j’affirme ; si l’esclavage moderne est aussi salvateur, qu’on rétablisse la colonisation ! Quand je vous disais que c’étaient des poètes…
