What Hell Is About, leur précédent album, avait propulsé DAGOBA sur les rangs de la scène internationale de manière spectaculaire. Bien entendu, des esprits contradictoires et un tantinet racoleurs avaient tout de suite hurlé au scandale et au retournement de casaque, comme si vouloir proposer sa musique au plus grand nombre était un mal en soi. Du coup, le nouvel album de DAGOBA était surveillé de très près pour pouvoir, au choix, soit l’encenser soit le descendre en flèche.
Que ceux qui pensent que le groupe est devenu commercial et « easy listening » me disent comment des gens qui n’écoutent pas franchement du Metal pourrait apprécier Face The Colossus. Parce que métallique, cet album l’est assurément. Les orchestrations et les boucles de samples n’ont jamais enlevé le côté Metal d’une musique, à que je sache. Et c’est bien de ce côté qu’il faut chercher les grosses évolutions du groupe. Bien sûr, les boucles froides et chirurgicales étaient déjà présentes avant, mais on n’avait pas de telles interventions de violons et autres instruments dans la musique. Personnellement, cela ne m’a en rien gêné. J’ai toujours apprécié les touches atmosphériques du groupe pensant que c’était aussi cela qui lui donnait sa personnalité. Sinon, j’aurais tendance à dire que le groupe pratiquerait un Metal assez classique qui se fond trop facilement dans la masse. Bon, honnêtement, je préférais les boucles et arrangements de What Hell Is About, mais je ne bouderais pas le plaisir que j’ai eu à écouter ceux de « Somebody Died Tonight ». C’est glacial et dérangeant, juste comme j’aime. Mais le groupe ne peut se résumer à ces incursions dans sa musique. Parce que le reste agit toujours comme un véritable rouleau compresseur qui peut aisément prendre la place de n’importe quelle séance chez un masseur qui utilise une version brusque de manipulations. Une autre grosse évolution dans le groupe est le chant de Shawter. Celui-ci varie son registre, ce qui n’est pas une mauvaise chose. Il a encore des progrès à faire sur son chant clair, parce qu’il n’est pas très convaincant sur « The World In Between », trop linéaire. Mais on ne peut que saluer les efforts pour briser la linéarité d’un chant hurlé ou d’un grunt. Par contre, une chose qui pourra déplaire est la production. Elle est énorme, rien à redire là-dessus, mais elle est trop brouillon. La batterie est trop mise en avant. Elle ne peut suffire à elle seule à donner la puissance au groupe, la guitare et la basse sont aussi importantes. Or, même si on entend qu’ils jouent, on a parfois bien du mal à distinguer les notes. Et les ajouts d’orchestration à fond n’arrangent pas les choses. Trop de gros son tue le gros son, comme on dit. Mais bon, cela ne veut pas dire que l’album est inaudible, seulement qu’il faut s’habituer à ce son pour en isoler les éléments.
Sinon, pour ceux qui suivent les aventures de Spawn, et plus particulièrement la version Godslayer, on pourra noter la ressemblance du « Colossus » de la pochette avec Urshrek, le dieu brutal et sanglant de l’hiver. Fin de parenthèse.
