Afin de, peut-être, clôturer une période pour en entamer une nouvelle, voici un double album de MORGION que Relapse Records nous propose aujourd’hui. Il s’agit en fait des albums Among Majestic Ruin et Solinari ainsi que de l’EP Oceans Without Shores. Les fans trouveront aussi d’autres titres non parus, comme ceux d’une démo. C’est donc le genre d’album à réserver soit aux fans qui désirent tout avoir de leur groupe préféré soit aux néophytes qui désirent connaître le groupe d’un coup et observer rapidement toutes ses facettes. Comme on aura le droit à une démo, on va se retrouver avec des titres en double, forcément, dans des versions différentes, comme par exemple pour « The Serpentine Scrolls/Descent to Arawn ». Les connaisseurs pourront ainsi comparer tranquillement les versions et observer le travail effectué entre les deux.
Le premier CD contient principalement l’album Solinari sorti après Among Majestic Ruin. On est en plein dans un Doom usant beaucoup des ambiances provoquées par des claviers pénétrant et lourds. Les guitares ne sont pas en reste oscillant entre son clair et saturé pour produire des cassures dans la structure des morceaux. Idem pour la voix. Malgré le côté assez classique de ce type de Doom, les morceaux plongent l’auditeur dans une introspection. Le son et les guitares claires pourraient faire penser à ANATHEMA si on n’avait pas ses multiples breaks qui font aller les morceaux d’un côté et de l’autre. A noter l’importance des claviers sur cet album puisque « The Last Sunrise » est un instrumental uniquement aux claviers.
Le deuxième CD contient lui l’album Among Majestic Ruin. Ici, le style est différent, plus porté vers un mélange de Doom et de Death. D’ailleurs, c’est étonnant de voir un groupe de Doom produire des accélérations comme sur « Relic Of A Darkened Past ». Malgré ce mélange un rien plus original, j’ai trouvé cet album moins bon. Les compositions ne m’ont pas parlé et le son plus cradingue n’a pas arrangé les choses. C’est simple, je n’avais pas l’impression d’écouter le même groupe. Et comme j’avais été assez enjoué par le premier, la déception était au rendez-vous.
Un double album mitigé au final qui a quand même le mérite de montrer l’étendu du potentiel d’un groupe, sans fard. Pas mauvais, mais pas exceptionnel non plus.
