Avant d’avoir mon bac en poche, j’avais découvert LOUDBLAST à travers des cassettes que m’avaient faites des potes. Déjà, je m’étais pris une bonne baffe, moi qui était habitué à des trucs plus soft (Thrash) et qui ne connaissait pas grand-chose au Death. Donc, quand sorti Sublime Dementia, j’avais sauté le pas et m’étais procuré le CD. Déjà, la chose qui changeait par rapport au disque de Metal de l’époque, c’était la pochette, extrêmement artistique et conceptuelle. Une foule de détails la composait et on pouvait passer du temps devant elle en essayant de recherche le moindre détail afin d’entrer un peu plus profondément dans l’univers du groupe. Parce que même si elle n’a pas été faite pour le disque, elle illustre très bien l’ambiance qui s’en dégage. Une ambiance lourde et pesante, hypnotique et kafkaïenne. Et puis, il y a eu surtout la musique de LOUDBLAST. C’est un Death Metal agressif mais terriblement recherché. Je ne parlerai pas de Progressif mais les structures des morceaux sont tout sauf simples. Pourtant, le talent du groupe fait qu’on n’est pas perdu dans les riffs et qu’on retrouve toujours son chemin vers la sortie. Une sortie qui n’est pas forcément éclairée pour autant et on passe par différents chemins sinueux, différentes routes sombres, avant de la trouver. L’agressivité de l’album ne tient pas tant à sa vitesse, qui n’est pas si élevée que cela, qu’au fait qu’il est littéralement écrasant. Les riffs sont sombres et la basse augmente leur lourdeur. Et puis, on ne peut pas oublier de parler de leur nouveau batteur, Hervé Coquerel, qui maîtrise ses fûts à la perfection et est d’une précision remarquable. Il n’abuse pas de la double grosse caisse et sait placer de petites finesses là où on n’en attendait pas trop à l’époque avec ce genre de groupe. La voix de Stéphane Buriez n’est pas étrangère non plus au sentiment qui nous traverse à l’écoute de cet album. Elle est profonde et semble sortir tout droit d’un endroit qu’on n’aimerait pas visiter. Et quand il décide d’essayer un chant clair et monotone, à la manière du premier album de SUPURATION, cela enfonce le clou un peu plus, créant un véritable malaise dans l’écoute.
Parmi les titres incontournables de cet album il y a « Presumption » qui l’ouvre admirablement bien. On peut noter aussi « Subject To Spirit » ou encore « Fancies » dont le refrain est tout simplement énorme. L’instrumentale « In Perpetual Motion » nous montre un nouvel aspect du talent du combo et possède des riffs et des solos qui restent dans les mémoires. « About Solitude » est un ovni sur cet album et, de ce fait, a été beaucoup décriée. C’est une chanson avec une guitare claire et une voix féminine soprano qui chante quelques vers. Personnellement, j’aime beaucoup ce morceau qui trouve toute sa place sur ce disque, de part son ambiance mélancolique et cette voix qui traverse l’âme. Et elle casse l’image du groupe, pour mieux pouvoir la reformer par la suite.
Je ne suis pas un inconditionnel de LOUDBLAST, mais Sublime Dementia est un album de Death français sublime et qu’il faut découvrir, ne serait-ce que pour savoir ce qu’il se passait déjà dans l’hexagone dans les années 90.
