MANIFEST est le patronyme en carton d’un groupe norvégien existant depuis 1999. Seul le nom est fait de carton. Le quartet composé de Stian Leknes (chant), de Ole Larmerud (guitares), de Kenneth Einarsen (basse) et de Alessandro Elide (batterie) est un groupe de live très expérimenté, ayant notamment tourné avec les demi-Dieux suédois de ENTOMBED et joués dans une profusion de festivals comme le Wacken Open Air, l’Inferno ou bien le Hole in The Sky ! Belle carte de visite. Les quatre membres ne sont donc pas des débutants ni des enfants de cœur et ce second opus Hedonism de leur jeune discographie est là pour le prouver. Pour remettre les choses dans leur contexte, "l’hédonisme" est une doctrine philosophique faisant du plaisir l’unique raison de vivre. La front cover de l’album illustre assez bien cette idée là avec les billets, les pièces de monnaie, les armes, bref, tout un panel visant à s’offrir une meilleure vie faite de jouissance. Dans cet ordre là, les norvégiens de MANIFEST manifestent justement un trop plein d’énergie dans leur combinaison de Thrash moderne accouplés à des éléments plus groovy. Ces neuf titres offrent un cocktail de mélodie et de colère attrayant. Le groove est d’ailleurs le maître mot, fil conducteur de l’opus. MANIFEST prend assurément du plaisir à jouer.
Emérites et énergiques, les compositions de MANIFEST, nimbées de riffs rentre-dedans, de rythmiques variées et de percussions parfois tribales (excellent travail du batteur) ont tout pour plaire aux fans de Thrash Death bourré aux hormones. L’accent est vraiment posé sur un jeu de percussions sorti des sentiers battus pour proposer un jeu plus bouillant et plus condensé. Des titres majeurs tels que «Breaking Em In», Thrash Death rageur et mortel, double grosse caisse menée tambour battant, en dira certainement plus que des mots. La piste «Cynical Perception» assure à mort elle aussi. On ne s’ennuie pas une seconde durant l’écoute. Ces morceaux dévoilent la facette la plus aboutie du jeu de MANIFEST qui sait pour autant composer des morceaux plus directs comme par exemple l’excellente «Chemical Solution» ou la furieuse «Cursed To Prevail». Le nom de l’album est bien choisi puisque cet album ne procure que du plaisir au cours de cette demi-heure non stop. La production rend à César ce qui est à César : élémentaire, fonctionnelle, mettant en avant chaque instrument et octroyant un son rond au chaud aux neuf titres.
Basique, MANIFEST ne remet pas en cause le Thrash Death mondial mais fait preuve de personnalité et d’originalité et c’est déjà beaucoup. Et quand on apprend qu’en Norvège, cet album sympathique a reçu de solides remarques et a joui d’un joli succès, on comprend mieux pourquoi Hedonism de MANIFEST marque autant de points partout où il passe. Un bon album, tout simplement.
