The Scarecrow d'AVANTASIA (le projet de Tobias Sammet) et 01011001 d'AYREON (celui du Hollandais Arjen Anthony Lucassen) sortent quasiment en même temps. Et c'est regrettable. Car les comparaisons multiples vont pleuvoir, alors qu'elles n'ont pas lieu d'être. En fait, AVANTASIA et AYREON n'ont que deux point en commun :
- la liste des invités est décoiffante
- Bob Catley (MAGNUM) et Jorn Lande (ex-ARK et ex-MASTERPLAN) sont de la partie
Ils auraient pu en avoir plus, car Lucassen rêve de voir Alice Cooper, son idole de jeunesse, participer à AYREON. Et si vous voulez entendre Alice, jetez plutôt une oreille sur The Scarecrow. D'ailleurs, pas sûr que Vincent Furnier aurait eu sa place sur le successeur de The Human Equation (qui date quand même de 2004), au milieu d'une multitude de chanteurs (ou chanteuses) confirmés ou en devenir.
Bien que Lucassen se charge des parties de guitares, basses, mandoline, claviers, orgue Hammond, etc. Il n'hésite pas à se faire seconder, entre autres, par les fameux Michael Romeo (guitare solo, SYMPHONY X), Derek Sherinian (claviers, ex-DREAM THEATER) ou encore le fidèle Ed Warby (ex-GOREFEST) à la batterie. Pour le reste, Arjen écrit, compose, arrange, produit. Et c'est grand : avec ce AYREON cru 2008, le terme de "Metal progressif” prend tout son sens.
Véritable rentre-dedans métallique aux accents orientaux, “Age Of Shadows” met parfaitement en condition pour débuter ce grand voyage. Après cet upercut aux rythmiques ravageuses survient un break subtil et floydien (l'influence du grand PINK FLOYD époque Dark Side Of The Moon est flagrante sur tout l'album), avant d'entendre le chant de sirène d'Anneke van Giersbergen (ex-THE GATHERING).
Très vite on comprend que cet opus de plus de 100 minutes (et oui y a 2 CD quand même ... une habitude chez Lucassen) est d'une richesse musicale et culturelle absolument remarquable. On y côtoie le folklore celtique avec flûtes et violons sur “The Truth Is In Here” ou encore “River Of Time”, avec le barde du Metal Hansi Kürsch (BLIND GUARDIAN, qui d'autre aurait mieux rempli ce rôle ?). Tandis que l'ombre de Mike Oldfield pointe le bout de son nez sur les titres précités, on croise aussi QUEENSRYCHE ou MEAT LOAF. Notre Hollandais prend un malin plaisir à métisser musique progressive et refrains immédiatement mémorisables, comme sur “Unnatural Selection” et son orgie jubilatoire de voix superposées, ou sur “Ride The Comet”.
01011001 est aussi l'occasion d'assister à de savoureux duos : Jorn Lande et Anneke sur le calme “Comatose”, Steve Lee et Daniel Gildenlow (PAIN OF SALVATION) sur le premier titre, etc. Chaque seconde et chaque note sont inventives et on ne note AUCUN temps mort : sur deux disques, chapeau bas ! Seul “The Sixth Extinction”, la pièce finale, fait quelque peu tourner en rond l'auditeur, comme pour mieux symboliser l'inévitable tourbillon destructeur dans lequel nous sommes tous amenés à disparaitre. Car ce disque est, encore une fois, témoin de l'inquiétude de Lucassen quant à l'avenir de l'Humanité. Le bonhomme s'interroge aussi sur l'avènement des machines dans notre monde bien fragile.
01011001, ou l'album prodigieux d'un musicien extraordinaire, dans tous les sens du terme.
