Malgré un Power Prog, de haute volée, les Danois de MANTICORA n’ont jamais véritablement réussi à décoller. Cet état de fait n’a cependant pas remis en cause la foi des Danois, comme le laisse supposer ce septième opus, qui s’inscrit dans un concept développé dans The Black Circus Part. 1, paru l’année dernière. MANTICORA nous entraîne donc une fois de plus sur la trace du cirque noir et de ses inquiétants saltimbanques. MANTICORA conjugue deux héritages, l’un issu de la scène Power, l’autre de la scène Prog, ce qui permet à la formation d’allier l’efficacité de l’un à la virtuosité de l’autre. Malgré une musique particulièrement riche avec de nombreux breaks, il y a au sein du combo un réel souci de la concision et la démonstration n’est jamais de mise. Ainsi, la musique de The Black Circus Part. 2 ne cherche-t-elle pas à perdre l’auditeur dans des méandres de technicité, même si les solos qui durent (« Of Madness In Its Purity ») et les synthés (« Gypsies Dance Pt. 2 ») sont bien là. Pour une galette Prog, cet album est en outre relativement court avec ses 42 minutes, d’autant que la moitié des compos est constituée d’interludes ne dépassant pas les 3 minutes. Dans les passages plus typiquement Power, s’il est à noter que les riffs sont bien acérés et véloces, voire thrashisants (« When The Soulreapers Cry »), MANTICORA n’en perd pas de vue son concept : ainsi, des sonorités gitanes apparaissent-elles ici (« Gypsies Dance Pt. 2 »), dominent là (sur l’instrumentale « Haita Di Lupi ») tandis qu’ailleurs elles se parent d’un côté médiéval à la BLIND GUARDIAN. D’ailleurs, le registre vocal de Lars F. Larsen évolue entre Hansi Kürsch (BLIND GUARDIAN) et Ritchie Krenmaier (STYGMA IV). Et si, tout comme moi, vous aviez manqué l’épisode 1, dites-vous que ce Black Circus Part. 2 est suffisamment bon pour s’apprécier seul.
