Dans le genre pas finaud, SABATON nous avait déjà montré par le passé qu’il se posait en monument ! Eh bien ce nouvel album enfonce encore un peu plus le clou. Tous les poncifs du Power Metal sont passés en revue à tel point qu’Attero Dominatus ressemble à un catalogue de tout ce qu’on peut trouver dans le genre. Ici, l’absence d’originalité n’a d’égale que l’absence de finesse ; c’est du lourd, du gros qui tache. Amoureux de Prog et d’expérimentations, passez votre chemin... ou apprêtez-vous à rigoler un bon coup.
Le truc, c’est que dans ce genre, SABATON parvient à tirer son épingle du jeu. Faute d’originalité, les Suédois appliquent à la lettre la recette d’un Power Metal efficace. Du coup le résultat est plutôt réussi.
Le rythme est rapide sur « Nuclear Attack », un titre agréable même s’il est aussi créatif que son nom le laissait présager. Et on est proche du Speed sur « We Burn ». Ces deux morceaux exceptés, SABATON évolue dans un registre généralement mid-tempo, avec des riffs puissants mais relativement légers, de nombreuses nappes de claviers viennent aérer l’ensemble tout en restant discrètes. Le chant de Joakim Brodèn est puissant, rocailleux et pas bien original, en cela on peut dire qu’il convient bien au groupe. L’efficacité du mid-tempo atteint son sommet sur « Rise Of Evil » dont le riff est à pleurer tellement on l’a déjà entendu, mais ça fonctionne !
Du côté des paroles on atteint également des sommets : Attero Donminatus évoque la guerre en général. Tout y passe, de la bataille de Berlin aux Malouines. Le tout se termine sur un hommage au Metal dans lequel le groupe a essayé de placer un maximum de noms de groupes, du coup le texte n’a plus qu’une signification assez approximative ! On dira que c’est du second degré.
Attero Dominatus ne plaira qu’aux plus bourrins d’entre nous (ça fait du monde quand même !).
