Il existe beaucoup de groupes qui prétendent, avec plus ou moins de vérité, faire du Metal extrême. Extrêmes, ils le sont. Alors, quel qualificatif donner à THE BERZERKER dans ce cas ? Parce que Animosity ne fait pas qu’afficher une étiquette brutale et barbare, il l’applique jusque dans les moindres recoins. Vous aurez beau essayez de trouver un endroit où violence et bestialité ne sont pas présentes, vous ne le trouverez pas.
THE BERZERKER réussit là où d’autres ne font qu’effleurer la barbarie, principalement grâce à sa batterie qui possède un son de boite à rythmes de techno hardcore qui se veut prendre la place principale sur le disque, aux côtés de la voix crachant son venin. Et ce ne sont pas de petits rythmes qui nous sont balancés à la gueule, mais des tempos frôlant le seuil de non retour. Parfois, on se demande même où est passée la caisse claire, sans parler des toms, presque inexistants. Et pourtant, la sauce prend quand même. Malgré cette simplicité extrême dans une batterie brutale, on se laisse aller… mais pas trop, sous peine de vouloir tout péter sur les rythmes frénétiques.
La voix qui accompagne chaque morceau est soit gutturale soit hurlée, mais toujours dans une optique affichée de trancher dans le vif. La concession n’est pas présente chez THE BERZERKER. La demi-teinte non plus. On prend ou on laisse, mais on ne se dit pas que l’on se tâte.
Parce que, finalement, tous les titres se ressemblent. Il y a bien sûr une guitare ultra rapide qui joue derrière la batterie, mais la production de l’ensemble ne la met pas en avant. On doit tendre l’oreille pour discerner les notes cachées derrière les beats qui martèlent le crâne à coup de grosse caisse surboostée et au son si graveleux. Ce qui donne cet effet d’écouter toujours le même morceau. Pourtant, on sent une certaine recherche, dans des breaks qui parsèment les morceaux, mais ce n’est pas suffisant.
Au final, Animosity est un album qui défoule, certes, mais qui est à réserver aux plus extrêmes parmi les extrêmes.
