Découvrir un nouvel album de SAXON, c’est toujours un moment particulier, sans doute parce que les Anglais ont largement contribué à l’écriture de l’histoire du Metal et qu’ils figurent parmi les grands groupes mythiques. Pourtant après un Lionheart linéaire et superficiel, on pouvait être inquiet. Eh bien soyons rassuré, le grand SAXON est de retour !
Passé un « State Of Grace » décevant à cause d’une structure de riffs vite soûlante, le groupe corrige le tire et nous assène un sans faute : on retrouve les titres Heavy puissants que le groupe semble affectionner depuis quelques temps (« Need For Speed », « Atila The Hun », « Let Me Feel Your Power ») mais on a aussi l’ancien SAXON avec la sensibilité Rock’n Roll d’antan (« I’ve Got To Rock (To Stay Alive)», « Going Nowhere Fast » terriblement groovie, « Ashes To Ashes »). Sans compter le véritable chef d’œuvre : « Red Star Falling » dans la droite lignée de la NWOBHM et digne successeur de « Broken Heroes », une power ballade où Biff est tout simplement prodigieux.
Charlie Bauerfeind est toujours en charge de la production et l’on identifie aisément le « grain » SAXON.
C’est sans doute ainsi que l’on reconnaît les grands groupes : cette aptitude à se relever après un album moyen et surtout cette capacité à pondre des titres qui vous foutent la chaire de poule.
