Dès l’ouverture de « Breathless », on s’attend à un Metalcore énervé, à défaut d’être inspiré. L’auditeur aura sans doute le souffle coupé par la hargne du chanteur mais l’on doute qu’il l’ait du fait de l’originalité du combo et puis, au détour d’un riff, on tombe nez à nez avec un passage jazzy. Notre premier jugement mérite d’être reconsidéré. « The Wind-Up » est dès lors plus intrigant et la musique de MEMFIS finit par être difficile à labelliser. Le groupe revendique plusieurs influences : MASTODON, OPETH, THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN (je serais également tenté d'y ajouter une touche de THEORY IN PRACTICE et de nos Français de GOJIRA) mais aussi, moins connu, BURST, groupe suédois de Metalcore progressif, et autant dire que cette dernière influence est la plus prégnante. The Wind-Up manie puissance, et même violence, et éléments Prog avec une habilité certaine, d'autant plus impressionnante qu'il s'agit là d'un premier opus. MEMFIS ne sacrifie jamais la mélodie au profit de la démonstration. Ainsi, on pourrait par de nombreux aspects qualifier la musique du combo de progressive et pourtant l'album ne dure que 38 minutes pour 11 morceaux, c'est dire que le tout est utilisé avec tact et parcimonie. Réalisé sous la forme d'un concept album, dont la cohérence n'est pleinement appréhendée qu'après plusieurs écoutes, The Wind-Up, manifeste engagé contre le consumérisme ambiant et ses conséquences sur notre environnement, vous saisit à la gorge par sa rage et aux tripes par sa dimension émotionnelle indéniable. Les breaks Prog sont parfois brutaux mais ils trouvent leur place dans ce vaste ensemble de riffs et d’harmonies, vous submergent (« Forever Discounted ») et vous feraient presque oublier les moments de rage, portés notamment par les vocaux, même si ces derniers se montrent parfois plus apaisés.
Alors, certes, on ne sait pas nécessairement où l’on va mais on prend plaisir à pérégriner dans ce qui s’apparente plus à un jardin anglais qu’à un jardin à la française.
