En activité depuis déjà mai 1998, la formation issue de Saint-Etienne n’en aura jamais fini d’accoucher de ses albums de Grind / Death. Suite à un premier opus Psychose paru en 2000 et qui avait à l’époque défrayée la chronique, les Français de BENIGHTED retroussèrent leurs manches ensanglantées pour nous céder un second opus d’une fulgurante et authentique puissance, l’album ICP (Insane Cephalic Production), un chef d’œuvre pour tout amateur de Grind Death.
BENIGHTED est une marque de fabrique, une signature et un morceau de BENIGHTED est un morceau de BENIGHTED. Escortés par une armada de musiciens de talents en allant de Julien Truchan (beuglements, cris, grognements) à la section rythmique de Fred Fayolle (batterie) et de Rémi Aubrespin (basse) en passant par les riffs à la Jack l’éventreur de la paire Olivier Gabriel/Liem N’Guyen, les Stéphanois ne souffrent d’aucun déficit technique. Une méthode et une rapidité d’exécution méticuleuse mise à profit et utilisée de façon chirurgicale tout au long de ces dix morceaux à mêmes de nous lobotomiser. Complètement barrées, les dix pistes composant cette œuvre musicale sont tout bonnement hallucinantes et cauchemardesques. Une demi-heure de pure folie, de démence, d’aliénation et de frénésie où le quintet échange tour à tour sa blouse blanche de thérapeute pour mieux nous anesthésier et nous prescrire une bonne dose de Grind Death au travers de morceaux tels que « Fœtus » ou « Deviant ». Champ lexical de rigueur, des pistes telles que « Perpetual Cannibalism » ou « Phlebotomized » sauront vous convaincre de vous mettre eu Grind Death. Un condensé de tout ce que le Metal extrême est capable de faire de nos jours : registres vocaux alternés (écoutez « Dementia »), breaks, cassures, recours à tout type de rythmiques, purs soli comme sur le morceau « Bestial Breeding », etc. Comment ne pas se laisser convaincre en jetant son oreille à des titres comme « Stay Brutal » ou « Insomnies » et leur cortège de rythmiques aussi lourdes que du Prozac, du Valium et autres.<br<
Ajoutons à cette auscultation du cervelet une production efficace et énorme en tous points : blastsbeats savamment répartis, lignes de basse audibles et étudiées, riffs Heavy/Thrash, ce ICP sonne comme une sorte d’hommage de BENIGHTED à une scène musicale qui les a un peu trop bercé près du mur étant jeunes. Quand on voit le résultat, on se dit que la scène Française peut être fière de compter dans ses membres un groupe de la trempe de BENIGHTED. De plus, la pochette originale évoquant le fond de chambre d’hôpital psychiatrique tapissée de ces matelas ne fait que rajouter au malaise de derviche tourneur engendré par cette rondelle si jouissive métalliquement parlant. Un disque qui a de quoi nous rendre complètement maboul!
