Sortis des bas fonds des plaines sombres et désertiques du Mordor (Le Seigneur des Anneaux, J.R.R. Tolkien), GORGOROTH c’est un peu les orques du Black Metal. Toujours guidé par l’emblématique Infernus avec Ghaal au chant, King à la basse et Kvitrafn à la batterie, la bande à Sauron fut fondée en 1992 dans les hautes terres de la ville de Bergen et reste à ce jour l’un des derniers fondateurs et artisans d’un Black Metal brutal, misanthropique et haineux. A l’image de son patronyme, les Norvégiens excellent dans la création d’une musique occulte et satanique. On se souvient notamment des albums Pentagram sorti en l’an de grâce 1994 et suivi deux années plus tard par l’excellent Antichrist. Leurs dernières livraisons ne sont d’ailleurs pas passées inaperçus, surtout Twilight of The Idols paru en 2003. On a affaire avec GORGOROTH à un sérieux client du Black Metal Norvégien, version canal historique ! GORGOROTH propose avec Ad Majorem Sathanas Gloriam son septième opus studio, qui, disons-le tout de suite est une véritable tuerie ! S’agissant en plus de son premier album chez Regain Records, les Scandinaves ne pouvaient commencer mieux leur nouveau contrat.
Marqué par de nombreux changements de musiciens (Infernus est le seul membre d’origine du groupe), GORGOROTH, tel un char d’assaut, va toujours de l’avant et détruit tout sur passage. Ultras carrées, les compositions sont de véritables pamphlets dirigées contre la société, ses codes et ses valeurs morales et religieuses. L’album démarre en trombe avec le morceau « Wound Upon Wound », un Black virulent et haineux où le quatuor Nordique démontre tout de même son sens de la rythmique et de la mélodie. L’art d’être bourrin et mélodique à la fois, une chose est sure, GORGOROTH en possède les clés.
Cet album est bien démoniaque, violent et haineux. Officiant dans le Black malsain, l’album qui dure un peu plus d’une demi heure est expédiée d’une manière fulgurante. Des titres supersoniques comme « God Seed (Twilight of The Idols) », « Exit » ou « Untamed Forces » ne viennent que le confirmer. Le morceau « White Seed », rapide et Heavy à la fois fait part en plus d’une rythmique et d’une ambiance un peu poisseuse. Seule la plage « Sign of An Open Eye » apporte du répit, un mid-tempo noir et ténébreux.
Les vocaux de Ghaal sont excellents, le frontman dispose d’un registre vocal varié, alternant les voix typiques Black avec d’autres nuances plus Black/Death et des lignes plus posées. Jamais lassant, l’album s’écoute d’une traite où l’on est accaparé par cette ambiance sinistre et inquiétante. De plus, les misanthropes jouissent d’une meilleure production que leurs premières livraisons ce qui parvient à en extraire tout leur potentiel, n’en déplaise aux puristes adeptes des productions de caves voûtées.
Malgré des problèmes de censures et de justice dont nous ferons l’impasse car cela n’est pas le propos, nous pouvons remarquer néanmoins qu’en dépit des problèmes qui affectent le combo Norvégien, ceux-ci n’en font pas état et nous livrent ici l’un de leurs meilleurs albums et un des meilleurs albums de Brutal Black depuis ce début d’année bien pauvre musicalement parlant, devrait-on dire.
