Moi qui en était resté à Waiting For The Twilight et Power Of The Universe (en vinyle), je me suis pris une bonne claque avec ce nouvel opus ! Non seulement les grenoblois ont considérablement fait évolué leur musique mais ils ont atteint une maturité prodigieuse. Nous sommes à des années lumières du Heavy franchouillard et bedonnant qu’on entend souvent. Ici, le groupe s’est donné les moyens de ses ambitions et elles sont énormes !
Jo Amore s’est mué en un chanteur monumental capable de rivaliser avec les plus grands et il emporte ses 13 titres avec une aisance incroyable.
On peut toujours s’amuser à chercher les ressemblances avec d’autres formations européennes évoluant dans le même style, il est vrai qu’il y a quelques légers emprunts, mais on a beau fouiner, on est obligé de constater que NIGHTMARE bénéficie de sa propre personnalité.
Bien que pratiquant généralement un Speed mélodique, le groupe s’ouvre vers le Heavy Metal, ne se refuse pas quelques passages progressifs, alterne les tempos pour un résultat extrêmement varié et riche. Car la diversité des mélodies et des riffs est proprement hallucinante, pourtant le groupe reste maître de son sujet et à aucun moment nous n’éprouvons de lassitude ou le sentiment que le groupe a cherché à complexifier gratuitement ses compositions. Tout semble à sa place.
L’interprétation est remarquable et chaque musicien a sa part de mérite dans ce succès : une rythmique solide et inventive, des solos bien vus qui interviennent toujours judicieusement. Et le chant, bien sûr. Quelques touches de synthé ont été apportées sans que la puissance en pâtisse puisque, là encore, le dosage est excellent. Par ailleurs, quelques invités prestigieux viennent compléter le tableau : Floor Jansen et Sander Gommans (AFTER FOREVER) ainsi que Ricky Marx (PRETTY MAIDS).
La production de Terje Resfnes (CARPATHIAN FOREST, TURISAS) est magistrale, outre un son énorme, elle enrichie les compositions de chœurs et de quelques samples.
Du coup, on est déçu d’entendre le fader (d’ailleurs un peu brutal) du dernier titre annonçant que la fête est finie.
Ajoutons que l’artwork est signé Jean-Pascal Fournier qui livre ici l’une de ses plus belles pochettes.
Du beau travail, tout simplement.
