POWERWOLF est un jeune groupe Allemand mené par un ancien chanteur d’Opéra Roumain déguisé en Dracula. Rien que leurs noms en disent long : Attila Dorn (chant), Matthew Greywolf (guitare), Charles Greywolf (basse), Falk Maria Schlegel (clavier) et Stefane Funèbre (batterie), ça ne s’invente pas ! On devine tout de même une petite pointe de second degré là dessous.
Le chant n’est pas du tout lyrique ; Attila a une voix très classique : puissante et légèrement rocailleuse.
Il n’y a aucune révolution à attendre d’un tel album, ni même le moindre soupçon d’originalité. POWERWOLF a puisé ses influences dans différents groupes, le plus flagrant étant BLACK SABBATH dont l’ombre plane sur l’ensemble de cet album et plus particulièrement sur “Lucifer In Starlight” et “The Evil Mad Me Do It”. On notera aussi des ressemblances avec MERCYFUL FATE et WASP ainsi qu’un passage de “Demons And Diamonds” carrément emprunté à DEEP PURPLE. Return In Bloodred ressemble donc à un blind test !
Pourtant il faut admettre que cet album est agréable. Car les riffs sont peut être simples, ils n’en demeurent pas moins efficaces : “We Came To Take Your Souls”, “Mr Sinister” et “Montecore” font immanquablement taper du pied.
La production est remarquable, elle est assurée par l’un des plus grands noms : Fredrik Nordström.
J’ai peur que la cape rouge d’Attila ne suffise pas à faire surgir POWERWOLF de la masse des groupes de Heavy qui sévissent actuellement. Return In Bloodred est un album plaisant mais dont le manque de personnalité reste trop criant.
