Après cinq interminables années d’absence, voici le retour du seigneur Trent Reznor, accompagné d’un nouveau combo, d’une nouvelle vie “clean” après la drogue et l’alcool, d’une nouvelle demeure californienne... après avoir habité la maison où le gourou Charles Manson ordonna le meurtre de 69 personnes dont l’actrice Sharon Tate !
On sent dans ce nouvel opus un souffle inédit.
L’album contient des titres beaucoup plus “techno” au sens propre du terme, ambiance dance floor avec “The Hand That Feeds”, rapport à son Amérique de Bush. : Ainsi, ce premier single est diffusé largement, notamment sur oui FM en playlist générale, mais un aspect plutôt commercial ressort par le même effet, alors que le personnage est le premier à cracher sur le star system (cf : “Starfuckers”) !
Certains titres sont très softs, mais très réussis : “All The Love In The World”, “Every Day Is Exactly The Same”, “Right Where It Belongs”...
Et la violence hurlée de NINE INCH NAILS ressort comme par bouffées, signant de la patte si marquée du frontman une œuvre qui exhume une nouvelle fois le talent de Reznor : “You Know What You Are”, “With Teeth, Getting Smaller”. Avec “The Line begins To Blur”, les hurlements saturés derrière un mur d’enceintes, sont tempérés par la douceur d’un refrain au chant clair !
Que dire, sinon que Lord Reznor est loin d’avoir perdu son inspiration en cure de désintox’, même qu’il a réussi à se renouveler : un tout nouveau NIN ?
