Après le succès immense de Alive, la tentation était forte de re-tenter l’aventure. Or qu’est-ce qui pouvait bien dissuader le groupe ? Non seulement les trois albums studio qui ont suivi sont d’immenses succès bourrés de hits atomiques, mais la réputation de KISS en concert est excellente. Qui plus est, le groupe n’a jamais ménagé ses dépenses en matière de show, et cela lui permet de s’imposer comme l’une des meilleures formation live au monde. Depuis Destroyer les tournées sont titanesques : 3 ascenseurs, des fumigènes, des lance-flammes, des étincelles, un light show unique s’ajoutent à une prestation scénique extraordinaire. A l’époque, on n’avait encore jamais vu ça.
Cet album est donc le condensé de toutes cette démesure qu’il restitue à merveille. On retrouve tous les succès du moment sans reprendre un seul titre de Alive.
Seule fausse note, les cinq titres qui ponctuent cet album (à l’époque sur la quatrième face du double disque) sont des enregistrements studio de seconde catégorie.
