"Non mais t'as vu le mec sur la cover, on dirait un putain de loup garou. Si le son est de la même veine, çà annonce du lourd, du poilu et du gras. Et puis un live capté au Roadburn, çà doit être du Stoner bien couillu."
Cette galette mon ami, c'est tout çà à la fois. Un son bestial, qui puise ses racines dans la terre grasse du delta du Mississipi. Il en ressort une force primale qui jaillit des instruments du trio du Kansas pour t'emporter dans un trip intense qui te laisses pantelant avec une folle envie de remettre çà sans attendre.
Fondé en 2007 par Steve Moss (vocal, guitare), le line-up du combo a mis du temps à trouver sa composition actuelle avec Brandon Burghart (drums) et Mike Boyne (basse). Le trio a sorti deux albums studio (The Midnight Ghost Train en 2009 et Foxhole en 2012). Un troisième est annoncé pour février 2015, Cold Was The Ground.
Mais surtout, le groupe a sorti ce disque live qui retranscrit à la minute près son concert au Roadburn festival 2013. Le Roadburn! la Mecque du Stoner.
Sois préparé, parce qu'en live, THE MIDNIGHT GHOST TRAIN, çà envoie du pâté.
TMGT est un groupe taillé pour la scène. Les albums studio, tout bon qu'ils soient, ne dégagent pas la même puissance. Leur son gagne à être livré sans effet, pur et non arrangé. Et çà, l'enregistrement au Roadburn le fait à merveille.
D'abord il y a le blues. C'est la colonne vertébrale de leur tempo. La batterie et la basse posent l'harmonique sur laquelle Moss laisse exploser son talent, sa voix et sa guitare.
Un chant grave et profond, brut de fonderie, avec une palette de sonorités allant du grondement d'un grizzly qui aurait forcé sur le Jack Daniel's ("Foxhole", "Mustache" ou "Tom's trip") à un grognement plus clair, quand le grizzly est sobre. Et quand la bête fatigue de la voix, elle laisse à la guitare le soin de faire le job.
La guitare. Boueuse avec des sonorités Sludge quand elle accompagne le chant de Moss, elle semble parfois réclamer son indépendance comme un étalon furieux, poussant des hennissements de désarroi quand on la force et qu'on la maîtrise enfin. Elle se fait alors miaulante comme un cougar en rut...
Petite pépite bluesy, le dernier morceau du set, "Ain't It A Shame", que Moss dédie à son père décédé, chanté a capella par le frontman tandis que Brandon bat la mesure aux futs.
Fin du concert, applaudissements timides et épars du public pendant deux minutes. "oh don't you stop the clapping just because we come up goddammit!" s'exclame un Moss un peu dépité par la froideur du public alors que le combo, qui a tout donné pendant ce set magique, remonte sur scène pour un rappel.
Ce live serait parfait si le public était plus dans le trip. Mais il parait que c'est comme çà au Roadburn, on a pas le droit de se lâcher... Dommage avec un groupe qui réveille tes instincts primaires. Qui te donne envie de réveiller la bête qui sommeille en toi.
Ils seront à Clisson pour le HELLFEST 2015, gageons que le public y sera plus chaud qu'aux Pays-Bas.
