J'ai un penchant pour le dernier PAPA ROACH et je pense que je me souviendrais encore longtemps de leur concert au Hellfest 2013. D'un côté, mon confrère CyberIF, un puriste, un dur, un vrai, très peu emballé par la théâtralité de Jacoby Shaddix et encore moins par ce Neo Metal alternatif sautillant nimbé de Rapcore. De l'autre, votre serviteur, gentille groupie plus admirative devant l'énergie des Californiens que devant la nouvelle coupe de Shaddix. Faudra que je parle de ZERO RESET à CyberIF. Il risque d'adorer. Sorti de nulle part, ce groupe italien vient revendiquer en ce début d'année 2013 sa part du gâteau. Il est vrai que le Neo Metal souffre depuis quelques années de sa propre popularité et il est amusant de constater qu'aujourd'hui, certains cherchent à redonner ses lettres de noblesse au style. Les Italiens se cachent sous l'étiquette Crossover mais la réalité de leur premier album est incontournable. Si les DEFTONES, P.O.D ou MUDVAYNE n'avaient pas ouvert une brèche, ZERO RESET ne s'y serait jamais engouffré.
Le constat est cinglant, ce qui ne veut pas dire que Closed In A Box ne mérite aucune considération. D'entrée, "Cheapstars" s'impose comme une sorte de single à mi-chemin entre RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE et SKINDRED. Idéal pour introduire le groupe et surtout son chanteur, Albert Sardei qui, pour le coup, est vraiment expressif au point d'en devenir caricatural. Son flow Hip-Hop ou ses plaintes geignardes plantent le décor. Au moins, si ça ne vous plait pas, vous tiquerez immédiatement. Et si vous avez la peau dure, les effets électroniques, les samples, les nappes de synthés vous achèveront. Pourtant, ZERO RESET n'est pas vraiment un groupe qui joue sur la superficialité. La plupart des compositions sont sincères, explosives, novatrices selon les sensibilités. Alors que le rythme teuton de "Dirty Stains" se rappelle au bon souvenir d'un OOMPH! période Plastik, "Face2face" fait dans l'Alternatif le plus assumé. Les arrangements, les variations vocales, les pannes rythmiques ("The Only One"), les accélérations font progressivement de ce premier album un disque éminemment riche et complexe. Et par-dessus ça, les Italiens font preuve d'une bonne volonté qui transpire des pores de leurs compositions. Côté négatif, on regrettera seulement qu'à maintes reprises, ZERO RESET s'embarque dans des délires d'écriture trop poussés. "Five Times" est un peu le symbole de ces contrastes trop piquants, avec son refrain aérien qui fait un brin Heavy progressif rencontrant le "Can't Stop Loving You" de Phil Collins et ses couplets débités à la façon d'un Mike Shinoda (LINKIN PARK). Comme quoi, la musique des transalpins évoque aussi de drôles de paradoxes. D'autres titres font dans ce registre, sans toutefois assumer un jusqu'au-boutisme aussi exacerbé ("Asteroids", "Dark Pool"). Mais ça n'a rien de vraiment surprenant. Je pense qu'à partir du moment où un groupe affine sa propre identité, il suscite inévitablement des réactions suspectes et des émotions qui peuvent être, à l'image de la musique, inattendues. ZERO RESET aura au moins ce charme de ne pas laisser tout à fait indifférent.
En plus de cela, et ce n'est désormais que du bonus pour eux après un premier album aussi bien foutu, Closed In A Box se révèle tout à fait cohérent avec la démarche artistique de ces mecs. Il n'y a pas de paroles en l'air, de promesses non tenues. ZERO RESET assume (presque) une musique qui n'est pas, ne leur en déplaise, du Crossover. C'est un Nu Metal Revival très imaginatif et puissant qui tombe comme un cheveu sur la soupe. Et vu que personne ne connaît, ce sera toujours moins honteux que d'avouer un penchant pour le dernier PAPA ROACH.
