Pour beaucoup, la carrière de PANTERA a commencé avec cet album, l’excellent Cowboys From Hell. Penser cela est une grossière erreur car il est question de leur…cinquième opus studio. Fondé en 1981 dans l’état tolérant et pacifiste du Texas, peu sont les personnes qui surent que PANTERA était à la base un bon petit groupe mignon de Glam Metal avec toute la panoplie requise.
Quatre albums en résultèrent, notamment le fabuleux Metal Magic ! Il est également véridique que le groupe ne s’est jamais vraiment vanté de son passé de Glameurs en bas résilles maquillées comme des putes du bois de Boulogne. Disons que pour ces quatre gaillards Texans qui jouaient les durs cowboys bien virils, il aurait été malheureux que leur nom soit souillé et taché par ce passé ressemblant au Secret de Brokeback Mountain avec 15 ans d’avance… Cowboys From Hell est donc l’album du début «officiel» de PANTERA après avoir tourné une page Glam Rock étendue sur six ans…Et bien leur en a pris de procéder à ce revirement artistique et musical car ce fut leur premier succès commercial.
Composé du line-up historique avec le regretté Dimebag Darrell (guitares), son frère, le potelé Vinnie Paul (batterie), le poilu Rex Brown (basse) et le drug-addict Phil Anselmo (chant), Cowboys From Hell marque un vrai tournant pour le quatuor texan. Fini les rythmiques Glams, bienvenues aux bons gros riffs grassouillets du Power Thrash Groovy qui sera leur nouvelle marque de fabrique. La panthère noire s’affirme sur ce cinquième album avec certains titres qui deviendront symboliques par la suite, notamment la groovy «Cowboys From Hell», ou leur Power Ballade «Cemetary Gates» pour ne citer que ces titres. Cet opus marque en tout cas leur entrée dans le gotha des grands groupes de Metal des années 90. En effet, comment resté insensibles à la voix puissante et charismatique d’Anselmo pendant que les soli de Diamond Darrell dévoilent le talent des compositions plus complexes qu’il n’y paraît des morceaux de PANTERA. Cet album est également l’un des premiers opus où l’ont peut entendre un flow vocal différent des autres groupes. En effet, Anselmo est influencé par la scène Hardcore, Punk d’où les intonations vocales différentes comme sur «Primal Concrete Sledge» ou bien avec ses pics vocaux aigus sur «Shattered» où Phil se prend carrément pour Rob Halford !
PANTERA se remet en cause sur cette nouvelle version de leur musique. Des pistes telles que «Heresy» ou «Domination» prouvent que ce PANTERA nouvelle mouture en a définitivement fini de son passé Glam. Monstre sur scène, le combo texan s’annonce également comme un très bon groupe de compositeur comme en atteste leur Power ballade «Cemetary Gates» ou l’original «Message in Blood». Tandis que leur frontman s’égosille, le trio de musiciens s’évertue à proposer des rythmiques groovies de qualité tout au long de l’opus. PANTERA grandit sur cet album et adopte le style qui fera leur renommée tout au long de leur longue épopée et aventure musical.
Les texans changèrent carrément de cap et signèrent avec Cowboys from Hell leur début dans la cour des grands du Metal Américain. L’avenir et leurs opus suivants le prouvèrent. Le résultat et le talent étaient là tel un diamant brut qu’il fallait façonner. Avec Cowboys from Hell, c’est désormais chose faite.
