EIKENSKADEN (FRA) - The Last Dance (2002)

Il fallait être devin pour découvrir que le concept sadomasochiste à peine dévoilé sur la pochette de The Last Dance allait carrément être creusé à l’intérieur du booklet. Demoiselles nues, à genoux, soumises, attachées et fessées dans un hangar désaffecté par des maîtresses toutes de vinyle vêtues, c’est donc dans un esprit dérangeant et glauque, mais non pas dépourvu d’une pointe de romantisme qu’EIKENSKADEN nous accueille. Difficile pour le moment d’évaluer le caractère précis de leur musique, par contre, on pourrait hypothéquer notre maison, y’a pas grand risque que les lorrains pratiquent autre chose que du Black Metal. Ou peut-être qu’ils signent ici la bande-originale de « Blanche-Fesse et les sept mains ». Mais permettez-moi d’en douter.
Non, non, me voilà rassuré à présent ! C’est sûr et certain, de la façon dont nous sommes introduits dans cet univers si noir, EIKENSKADEN n’est pas là pour plaisanter. « Then I’ll Erase Myself Forever » renferme une certaine nostalgie, un spleen grossier exprimé d’une manière juste magnifique ! Là va être la particularité de cette dernière danse. En effet, si le Black proposé est plutôt anodin en lui-même, il est en revanche, lustré comme une table en chêne (pour l’anecdote, EIKENSKADEN signifie « bouclier de chêne ») par de somptueuses nappes de piano. La somme en devient délétère, toxique. Les français sont en train de plonger dans une folie inconsciente. Une descente aux enfers dans l’obscurité la plus totale. Une chute qui se rapproche plus d’ailleurs à celle d’un inconscient qui bascule dans un puits sans fin. Avant d’être lourdement écorché par les fragments d’os de ceux qui se sont trop penchés avant lui. Voilà une métaphore qui sied bien à la production de nos six excités. Les guitares évoluent dans une conventionalité totale, bien qu’à créditer de solos fulgurants (« Lunarian Seas », « A Requiem For My Cold Love »…). Le mixage est très approximatif, seul le clavier ressort correctement. Et c’est tant mieux, il n’y a pratiquement que lui de vraiment intéressant. Le reste est un condensé de ce qui à déjà pu se faire de mieux et de pire. La voix est la plupart du temps trafiquée. De ce fait, elle rappelle fortement celle du bon vieux Shagrath (DIMMU BORGIR) quand il se fait lui aussi refaire les cordes vocales par ordinateur. Il n’empêche, malgré un cruel manque d’expérience, il ressort tout de même une vraie mélancolie de leurs propositions. Une sincérité qu’il est impossible de ne pas souligner, tant ce serait faire preuve de mauvaise foi.
Alors oui, EIKENSKADEN est très probablement un des premiers à forer l’idée du Black Metal romantique. Et il semble évident que dans ce style, leur niveau est exemplaire. Mais pour moi, même si l’esprit « true » est respecté avec un son grésillant et tout le folklore, même si la thématique SM est changeante, même si les intentions sont là, il manque sensiblement quelque chose pour me transcender. Ce n’est donc pas demain que j’irais acheter une cravache.
NB : Officiellement, cet album à été crédité de 7 points sur 10. Officieusement, il n’en mérite que 6.5.
